Steve Jobs establishes ethos in his speech by telling the audience that he was adopted as a young child. He also tells the audience that he dropped out of college and then dropped back in. Many people can relate to this, and that is why this is ethos. When he dropped back in he learned calligraphy, which is now in the computer programming of the Mac. Steve says, “During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar…” He says Pixar became the biggest animation company, which was true. Steve declared, “Getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could’ve ever happened to me.” Steve establishes logos when he says that he and his friend started Apple in his garage at age twenty. I think he uses logos because it is purely logical that no one wants to die. No one wants to die is purely logical because everyone says this. I think he uses pathos because he brings lots of emotion into the speech when talking about death. Many of us have had loved ones or pets die, and I think when he talks about death, it kind of brings these emotions up to the top. It also just brings sadness itself into the conversation. Whenever people talk about death, everyone just feels sad. “Stay hungry. Stay foolish.” I think this means we should keep learning, or that we need to keep trying new things, one or the other. Saying that, I think it shows logos. I think it is logical to keep learning. I also think it is logical to keep trying new things. I think it also establishes ethos because most people who try new things are better than they used to be. If we keep learning we can be better than we used to be too.
