September 11, 2001 is a day that has gone down in history as a tragic day in American history due to the horrific terrorist attacks caused by the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda. A couple of hours later following the attacks previous president George W Bush delivered a much-needed reassurance and a sense of leadership to the American people in his address to the nation when most American felt uneasy and unsure of what the future would look like. Bush uses several examples of Pathos, Ethos and Logos along with several uses of rhetorical devices to get American moral up from the ground. “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shattered steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.” Bush tries to get American resolve up by stating that the American resolve cannot be easily shaken up and will not fall. These are all excellent examples of Pathos, they give you an emotional response, they use heavy imaginary to get to you from connections with all the victims. Bush continues to call for action in the face of evil, and for Americans to keep their heads up in the face of tragedy and evil. He also talks about the guilty getting punished and justice being served, “Justice will be done”, this again speaks to the majority of Americans who want justice and for the people who have caused this tragedy to be punished. This is an excellent example of logos as it appeals to the use of logic, justice is logical and it is something that people expect.
