Family and Unity My definition of family would be similar to Ma Joad’s because I believe that family members should stay unified or at least connected throughout their lives.Your family is the collection of people that you grew up with, and they were the ones that shaped and molded you into the person that you are today. They were the ones who sacrificed parts of their own lives so you could live yours in luxury. It would be terrible to throw their gifts away and never see them again or even try to repay them in another manner.
As the novel progresses, I feel that Ma understands that keeping the intimate bond of the family secure is near impossible. She is hurt when a member leaves or dies, and Ma understands that the family unit starts to deteriorate. Once she accepts this fact, she begins to make sacrifices that would not keep the family on the pedestal that she holds them in. An example of this is on page 257 when Ma cries out, “I dunno what to do. I got to feed the fambly. What’m I gonna do with these here?” (257).

Based on the novel, she sees her whole family as close knit and she tries to keep it this way. I would not say that my uncles or grandparents are exceptionally close like they are with the Joads, close, I would say that they are just distant family. We are connected by blood and we see eachother at the occasional event, but I am nowhere near as close to my extended family than I am to my immediate family. The only exception is that there is one aunt and one uncle that I would say are closer to my family than the rest, but again nothing near living together. We do eat together and recently see each other daily, so I feel like our relationship is growing closer. The Joads were driven together by a disaster, which has not happened in my family, but it could happen in the future. There is still the possibility that we could be driven to be like the Joads in the
