1.1 Background of the Study Every language has its own idiomatic expression in the form of words, phrases, and expression which has a purpose to express the meaning through the lexical item. Idiom is a group of words whose meaning is different from the meaning of the individual words, for example: ‘Let the cat out of the bag’ is an idiom which means to tell a secret by mistake (Hornby, 2010:744). Every idiom is commonly difficult to understand because it has special meaning and also it cannot be translated literally. In understanding the meaning of idiomatic expression, we should also learn the other cultures to get the meaning of what idiom that the culture used. 1.5 Research Method Research method is a process or procedure to get the goals of the research and find the answer for the problem. The research method of this study is consists of three elements including data source, method and technique of collecting data, and method and technique of analyzing data. 1.5.1 The Data Source Data source is the source from which data was obtained for the analysis in order to support the validity of this paper (Setiawan, 2010:5). The data in this study used primary data and directly taken from the novel. The form of data in this study is English idiomatic expressions and their meaning. The English idioms were taken from one of the famous and best seller novel in the world which entitled “The Hobbit, or There and Back Again”. This novel was written by J.R.R Tolkien and it is published firstly in 1937 by George Allen & Unwin in England. This novel was chosen as the data source because it is one of famous novels and it is also coherence with the topic of this study. This method was used to describe and give clearly explanation since the data as categorized into non-numerical data. The collected data were intensively studied and analyzed based on two theories that applied in this study. There are some steps in analyzing the data in this study. The first step in analyzing the collected data was identified and categorized English idiomatic expression into several types based on the theory by Palmer (1976). He divided English idiomatic expression into three types such as: phrasal verb, prepositional verb, and partial verb. Then the meaning of the idioms were analyzed semantically based on theory of Semantic Triangle who proposed by Ogden and Richards in Palmer (1976) and they stated that, we need to divide an idiom into its main aspects such as symbol, thought or reference, and referent to get the intended
