Personal Development Planning

To begin with, what is personal development planning (PDP)? This course was introduced to students to create awareness about their future goals and the skills they hold in order to reach those goals. PDP is a great example of intrinsic motivation because it encourages students to work to their full potentials without the expectation of receiving external rewards such as, money. However, the rewards that the students do gain is the feeling of accomplishment and self-satisfaction. (Anon, 2015) suggests, students that undertake PDP are likely to be self-assured individuals as it drives students to always learn whether it is behind school doors or out in social settings.

In the business sense, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and supervisors are examples of leaders. They make sure that the business is efficient and effective however, this cannot be achieved without a strong team force. It is stated by Holberton (2015) that, as soon as a person enters a workplace, there are countless numbers of organizations that only focus on teaching leadership skills long after receiving formal education. Leadership skills is another component of PDP which implements the seriousness of directing/controlling and the impacts in can bring. It is important that a student who has the ambition to become a manager, a business owner or some sort of role which requires leadership, builds the attributes of a leader from earlier on in life (Strang, 2013). Now, another question arises. What makes a leader good? What is the importance of leading? A person that obtains effective leadership skills holds the power to motivate/influence others, organizing, dealing with mistakes and most importantly take full responsibility of decisions (Kent.ac.uk, 2015). Moreover, leadership skills being a part of PDP allows students to recognize their true potential in the classroom and compare if they have the same influence on people elsewhere. Since leaders are known for influencing people and setting out either good or bad examples, it is not entirely necessary for the person to hold a high rank in order to lead. For example, a student is not academically successful but has the ability to always catch other class-mates attention. This could later result as a morale boost for the student to find new ways of improvement and give a sense of direction as it brings out an individual’s talent. Finally, the leadership skills learnt in PDP could also result in faster and clearer communication by giving the right tasks to the right
