The problem of human inequality and the divisions within human society is a big part of the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” and it is still part of our society today. An example of this problem is the trial of Tom Robinson, Walter Cunningham Jr. being treated differently because of who he is, and the discrimination against black people. Our society is still dealing with this situation because people are harassing other races and black people are getting killed by police officers. For example, he isn’t forced to go to school all school year because he works with his father as a result of that it he doesn’t get enough education. By him only going only on the first day of school makes the situation worse and also his family is very poor even though they work on a farm they don’t get enough money. On the first day of school, Walter didn’t have shoes on nor any lunch to eat. Miss Caroline gives Walter a quarter, but he won’t take it because he was too ashamed to tell that he doesn’t have any money to pay her back and his family is very proud of him for that. Scout got in trouble due to trying to explain to Miss Caroline the reason Walter won’t take the quarter. As the result to that situation Scout blamed Walter for getting her trouble, so then she rubbed dirt in Walter’s nose. Black people are mostly being affected by racism. They are getting killed by police officers and people, like the tragic death of Eric Garner. Eric was killed by being choked to death by officer named Danny Pantaleo. Eric was suspected of selling single cigarette pack without a tax stamp again after he was out on bail for the same thing. According to the articles, two witnesses said that Eric told officers to back off and then he swung his arms at them. Officer Pantaleo was trying to put the handcuffs on Garner, but he couldn’t due to Garner pulling his arms away. Officer Pantaleo put his arms around Eric’s neck and took him to the ground. Later, Officer Pantaleo removed his arms from Eric’s neck and he pushed the side of his face into the ground. While that was happening, four officers were trying to restrain Eric, who was continually repeating “I can’t breathe”, while being face down. He remained unconscious for seven minutes while waiting for an ambulance. The EMT didn’t perform CPR on Eric at the scene due to believing that he was breathing. Due to Eric being black and believing that he might of being armed Officer Pantaleo choked him. However, he wasn’t armed during that time.
