1. Values and Attitudes are one area that I should strengthen. As human services professional, we are given the opportunity to know thyself in what he or she feels delivery of services will be given to the client to best meet their needs. There are values and attitudes that come up in this field of services, however, these are areas within a person background and the way that person has been taught to accept some behaviors more so than others. I know that these values and attitudes can make one feel uneasy about the service delivery.
Section 1: Professional Development Plan For most of my life I have been motivated to help people so when I made the decision to continue my education at Walden University, I knew that I was ready for the journey. I am currently seeking a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and I am expected to graduate in the winter of 2025. This paper was written on June 30th, 2023, with the intent of further understanding my motivations for seeking this degree as well as visualizing the type of counselor I want to be in the future. Throughout this paper, I also discuss what is expected of me throughout my degree program, counseling career, and overall professional development.
CHM1 Task 2 A. Personal Values Here are my four top personal core values. 1. One of my personal core values is honesty. Being honest is personally meaningful to me because I believe that it is important for others to know that I am trustworthy and truthful so that they can feel secure that I will act in an ethical way. By being honest I gain trust, which matters to me.
and intrigued by the mind-body connection as well as the importance of human activity and occupation in maintaining mental and physical well-being. At the same time, my desire to work directly with people and be able to make a positive and lasting change to their lives by empowering them and helping discover their strengths and confidence in themselves to achieve their goals, led me to a realization that a career in occupational therapy would be a perfect fit for me. To me occupational therapy is a dynamic, rewarding, challenging, and inspiring field where I can fully realize my skills and knowledge. Having always been a firm believer in the patient-centric approach, I am passionate about providing excellent service to patients by improving their performance, preventing illness and disability and promoting adaptation to life
My educational goal to pursue a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a specialization in Trauma and Crisis Counseling is a result of my personal life experiences and my admiration for those who work in this field, dedicated to helping those who may feel dragged down by toxic cycles and heavy memories, like myself once did, to create a life filled with meaning. As a Sociology major in my undergraduate career, I’ve always been interested in other people and why they operate the way that they do. It wasn’t long after earning my bachelors that I came to the belief that my past experiences and mental health journey could become my superpower to help others, and that if I wish for society to collectively feel better, then the focus on
However, it has allowed me to see though my Interviewing Skills class that I am able to have a professional relationship with a client and conduct a full counseling session. These counseling sessions consist of welcoming, trust building with client, paraphrasing and summarizing skills, active listening skills, closing strategies and also termination of the counseling process. Even through I have learned that I am better in practice then technical skills I have room for improvement in both areas. I can improve on the practice part of counseling because the more I counsel the easier it is to put skills into the session without have to consciously do
I reached out to various facilities to try and secure an in-person experience and was approved to shadow the Hand Therapy team at JAG-ONE Physical Therapy. The shadowing experience taught me more about the specialty such as the types of interventions implemented, the equipment used, and the range of conditions treated by a hand therapist. The best part of the experience was talking with the clients and hearing how much occupational therapy has impacted their lives. Listening to the personal stories of regaining confidence, strength, and independence to return to work or leisure has shown me that occupational therapy is exactly the career I want to pursue to achieve my professional goals, as I want to be able to contribute to that positive impact in someone's
I became interested in becoming a therapist shortly after graduating high school. I have always been told that I`m a great listener and many people come to me for solutions to their problems. Being able to help my friends and family with their problems is something I love to do. I have experienced many family members, friends, and along with myself with needing therapy. There is various forms of treatment people can receive in therapy, one being marriage and family therapy.
This course will focus primarily on the development of attending skills in helping professions. Over the last two years I have taken several psychology and sociology classes, with each one offering new and eye-opening perspectives into therapy techniques. The first thing I was asked to do was a 50-question self-inventory aimed toward helping me gain awareness in personal therapeutic approaches. I did struggle with some of the questions, feeling that it was nearly impossible to choose only one “right” answer. That is the most interesting thing about therapy.
Personal Mission and Vision: I have wanted to become a counselor for many years and the reality is that counseling is deeply intertwined with trauma work. In fact, oftentimes it is the same thing! My motivation for entering this field is my own positive experience with therapists walking alongside myself during times of my own personal trauma. On the flip side, I also feel motivated by the therapists that have failed to support me adequately. These experiences highlighted just how impactful counseling can be and I want to be part of that support in the most positively impactful way that I can.
Therefore, this will allow me to put my interests aside and place the needs of others above when working in a professional capacity. This value will guide me to use my professional voice to promote the well-being of my clients. Moreover, this will extend to promoting personal development in
The more I don’t know, the more I know. The more I realize I don’t understand, the more I discover my desire to know more about psychology. My interest in educational psychology was triggered by my first experience in changing schools.
Hello, everyone, For our final discussion is about assessing our core values as a physical therapist. To achieve the strategic plans toward vision 2020 is offering the entry level of DPT that involves the core values of physical therapists (APTA, 2003). Physical therapy professionalism has seven core attributes/ values (Senior,Ferrie,& Carter, 2006). Core values are the principles of the physical therapy code of ethics.
All of these can step-by-step help me develop my personal and professional skills, also provide a foundation for continued professional development. To conclude my reflection, I have discussed my future employability, how to use the skills and experiences to own professional development,
‘We would be missing the opportunity given to us by the people with whom we work if we did not learn and grow from our experience’ (Howard & Lyons, 2014, p126). ‘The therapeutic self broadly refers to the process of the individual evaluating the effect of his or her characteristics, values and practice interactions with others and the extent to which this brings development and insight’ (Freshwater 2002 cited by Kwaitek et al, 2005, p 27). If we are modelling confident and proactive self-care and self-development we can be a positive role model for those we work with. This concept of self-awareness and developing oneself can promote and encourage one to be the best that they can
