In his essay “Arrested Development: The Conservative Case Against Racial Profiling” published in the New Republic on September 10, 2001, professor James Forman Jr. illustrates his disagreement with racial profiling. Forman Jr. is a professor at Yale Law School. He teaches Constitutional Law and seminars on race and the criminal justice system. In his piece, Forman primary goal is to create understanding about the effectiveness of racial profiling and how this affects the black community especially youths. Forman achieves this by appealing to a liberal audience.
US are one of the countries that have a diverse culture and different races such as Europeans, Asians and black Africans American. They have been living together for many years now, and they experienced issues that have a negative impact on the minority of the population. Racial profiling has ended lives of innocent people. The death of Trayvon Martin is an example of racial profiling gone wrong. On February 26, 2012 Trayvon Martin went to a convenience store and proceeded to walk through a gated community while in the phone with his girlfriend. A neighborhood watchman by the name of George Zimmerman was following Martin in his car. Zimmerman had called the police saying that he felt like Martin might have been up to something.
Another form of discrimination is police brutality to black minorities. Black minorities in the United states of america are beaten, violated and murdered by officers of the law that sword to protect and serve them. Police brutality is an issue that needs to be stopped. One example of police brutality was the incident regarding Michael Brown. Michael Brown was a 18 year old African American that was fatally shot by a white officer by the name of Darren Wilson.
Police officers patrolling the area assumed he was breaking into the residence and arrested him.(Racial Profiling) Even though we are a very open society, many people are still profiled just because of their race at many shopping centers, airport, by police and in many other situation and many other people. Some people believe racial profiling does not exist anymore. They are wrong because racial profiling has become more common since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, especially toward Arabs and Muslims. It refers to the discriminatory practice, especially by law enforcement officials which targets individuals for suspicion of crime based on the individual 's race, ethnicity, religion or national origin. Racial profiling has been and is still an issue today in almost every part of the United States. Their policy states that no state law enforcement agency or official shall stop, detain, or search any person when such action is solely motivated by consideration of race, color, or ethnicity, and the action would constitute a violation of the civil rights of the person (Kentucky General Assembly, 2010). They also gave the local law enforcement agencies a chance to modify the policy and get it approved.
The Destruction of Racial Profiling in Society “Studies show that police are more likely to pull over and frisk blacks or Latinos than whites. In New York City, 80% of the stops made were blacks and Latinos, and 85% of those people were frisked, compared to a mere 8% of white people stopped. Racial Profiling is way to discriminate people by color, or race. Many people such as Hispanics and Black are being blamed for crimes that they do not commit.
Why do some people get pulled over? A lot of the time people reply that they got pulled over because of racism. There can be some truth into this statement, but most crimes are done by colored people. This statement can easily and probably is the biggest excuse used against police. “The real truth is that we all do this, when we look at someone we know nothing about we assume until otherwise” (Mittman).

Throughout history, disputes and tensions between law enforcement officials and communities of minorities have endured hostility and violence between each other. Racial profiling has become a “hot topic” for researchers as well as for politicians and by now it is likely that most citizens are at least aware of the common accusations of racial bias pitted against law enforcement (Cochran & Warren, 2013). Communities of color are being discriminated against and racially profiled by white police officers for any suspicion of criminal activities. It has been widely assumed by policy makers and citizens alike that allegations of racial profiling are mostly associated with the policing practices of white officers and their treatment of racial and ethnic minorities (Cochran & Warren, 2013). Also, individuals of minority descent will certainly recognize that they are being racially profiled during a stop that is being conducted by a white police officer.
I researched a little more in depth about how people are stopped solely based on their image, more so their race. American Civil Liberties Union has an entire article on this subject. The article is titled Racial Profiling and addresses how certain races are stopped by police just based by their race. The article is very powerful and examines how racial profiling can be hazardous to your health because it can lead to death. The article states, “ Many racial profiling victims walk away with traffic tickets, but too often for others the outcome of racial profiling is death” (Racial Profiling and Liberties Union).
