The inmates were treated so poorly that they felt they needed to retaliate against the guards. Working in a prison is a possible career choice for me, this book taught me issues that can arise while working in a prison. As a correctional officer, I want to be a productive and effective, I will be friendly with the inmates but not become friends. Treating them with respect will often times result in them giving respect back, which will make them trust and respect your authority. I will be attentive of my surroundings and inmate interactions.

The correctional system plays a vital role in the country. The system is made of several government agencies that are charged with the authorities of safeguarding the populace from dangerous individuals. Generally, this is accomplished through a number of methods, such as imprisonment and probation. 1.0 Introduction The supervision of prisoners is an important element of all prisons. Depending on the model of supervision, it can be limited or promoted by the design of a prison, the philosophy of a prison, and how prison staff manage prisoners. These three aspects will be discussed below. Further on, we will discuss the two main models of supervision that are used around the world. First is the direct supervision model (DS), and second is indirect supervision (IDS).
Managing a correctional agency requires effective recruiting, training, directing, and motivating staff to provide a stable and safe correctional environment. Communication between supervisors and staff is paramount in the field of corrections. Supervisors and staff spend an incredible amount of time communicating with each other to carry out daily functions, including understanding policy, following procedures, and accomplishing work. Supervisors continuously communicate with staff by giving direction, seeking input, listening, and sharing information to successfully carry out their duties and accomplish the work of the agency. Supervisors not only communicate with the individuals they supervise, they also communicate directly with other supervisors and managers, executive leaders, other departments, and external sources.
Correctional officers are trained professionals who directly supervise and monitor inmates, prisoners, or detainees awaiting trial. The professions that encompass the corrections field workplace are individual department directors, facility managers/supervisors, service specialists, community officers, probation, parole, superintendents, and clinical services to include mental and physical health providers. The ways that corrections cultural mix can be an advantage to the workplace environment are it can create a sense of cultural awareness and it develops non-traditional partnerships. Cultural awareness in the correctional environment exposes others to different ideas and points of views. This helps to build the frame for teamwork.
Finally, I think overall the book did cover the issues that affects the prison system, and what has been covered in this module. For example, the overcrowding, the mentality of how guarding can cause one to become more forceful and unjust, the racial disparities,

Furthermore, the parole system is known to have a multitude of problems laced within it, these problems can be solved by focusing on parolee and parole officer relationships, and partaking in systems that improve the underlying issues. Following through to fix these affairs may seem unrealistic, but a solution could be in sight. Issues within the parole system in the United States include the ineffectivity of parolees meeting with their supervising
