Who Is To Blame For The Deaths Of Romeo and Juliet? Over the course of any story, there are events that lead up to the end result. This relates to the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, because there are many events during the play, but they are not important at the time. Commonly there are minor details in stories that does not seem to be important in the beginning, but are significant in the end. Knowing that society changed characters actions, who is logically to blame for the result at the end of the story? A key characteristic that can lead to who had the biggest impact on Romeo and Juliet’s death, would be the characters decisions and reactions to events taking place during the play. Juliet and Romeo were close enough with the Friar to allow him to know about their intimacy which resulted in Friar Lawrence marrying the star-crossed lovers, “Come, come with me, and we will make short work, / For, by your leaves, you shall not stay alone / Till Holy Church incorporate two in one” (2.6.35-37). Friar Lawrence encouraged Romeo and Juliet’s relationship because he thought that the Capulet and Montague families would end their feuding if their children joined hands. He allowed them to go against their families beliefs, which led to more secrecy with their parents. Friar Lawrence is also seen as a father figure to Romeo and tries to comfort him with his conflicts, “O deadly sin, O rude unthankfulness! / Thy fault our law calls death, but the kind prince, / Taking thy part, hath rushed aside the law / And turned that black word ‘death’ to / ‘banishment’” (3.3.25-29). Prince Escalus prohibits Romeo from being on Verona streets, after he kills a Capulet to avenge his close friend. Romeo is saddened by his banishment because he can no longer see his newlywed wife, but Friar Lawrence claims that the Prince has been cooperative with his punishment. Friar Lawrence also attempts to assisted Romeo and illustrated a plan to reunite him and his wife after his felonious action. After the Friar gives Juliet a vial with a drug in it to keep her in a restless sleep, he tells her that he will send a letter to Romeo informing him that she isn’t actually dead, “Hold, get you gone. Be strong and prosperous / In this resolve. I’ll send a Friar with speed / To Mantua with my letters to thy lord” (4.1.124-126). Friar Lawrence has to help Juliet to get out of her unwanted marriage. Although Juliet is willing to do anything to get out of here marriage to Paris, Romeo has no idea that this plan has been made. Later, Juliet somewhat regrets getting the poison and wonders if Friar Lawrence had gave her a real drug to kill her so he doesn’t have to explain how he wed the two lovers without their parents’ consent. Once Friar Lawrence confronts Friar John about the letter not making it to Romeo, he realizes his plan had failed and he needs to get to Juliet, before she wakes, “Unhappy fortune! By my brotherhood, / The letter was not nice but full of charge, / Of dear import, and the neglecting it / May do much danger.
