What is morality? The Oxford Dictionary defines it as “a particular system of values and principles of conduct, especially one held by a specified person or society.” In the book A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the two main characters, Gene and Finny have very different moral attitudes. Gene’s morals are realistic and applicable to the real world while Finny’s are honorable, righteous, and ideal, but lack a sense of reality and as a result, he is unable to accept the truth about human nature, and ends up with serious consequences. Although Finny is extremely righteous and honorable, his ethics lack a sense of reality and as a result, he ends up with serious consequences.

The scene as well as this biblical reference inspired the idea of contrasting flourishing, healthy, land with the barren, unfruitful land as well as the placement of the tree of life and fence of coffins. I want the viewer to recognize that the number of branches on the tree of life represents the number of troy’s family members who are alive while the number of branches on the bare tree within the side of death represents those that have passed.
Morality is something that is key to living a good life and setting a good example for yourself as a whole. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee, readers are shown a good example of morality from the character Atticus Finch. What readers can learn from Atticus is that he sets a good example for his children Jem and Scout and also a good example for the people reading To Kill a Mockingbird. Some of the things that he says and does are great things to remember when making a tough decision. Morality is something that we need more of in this world.
