A Groomer will usually work in kennels, shelters, pet stores, veterinary facilities and pet owners' homes. Their main duty is to maintain an animals physical appearance, the animals are normally just dogs but sometimes may also be cats, they do this by keeping the coat in good condition by brushing, trimming, clipping and/or bathing the animal. They also may be required to clip nails, clean ears and brush teeth. As well as working with the animals a groomer must also work with the owner; providing advice and guidance on coat care, grooming and diet along with scheduling appointments and reporting any issues.
To be a groomer good hand-eye coordination and good attention to detail are essential because an owner expects their pet to return with an even and clean coat; in order for this to happen it is important to have nimble fingers and good reflexes because animals will fidget and move whilst they are being groomed. Having good attention to detail is also key so as to notice any skin issues, parasites or issues the animal may have with its mobility. Having patience and ability to control dogs as some dogs may be difficult to handle, may not be trained or still be a puppy therefore it’s important to know how to handle a dog with confidence.
