Emotional intelligence is “the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them, and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions” (Emotional Intelligence Wow Factor.pdf.). There are four competencies of emotional intelligence. Self-awareness is the ability to analyze one’s emotions and understanding the impact of decisions made based on gut feelings. Self-management is the ability to control one’s emotions, impulses, and adapt to different scenarios. Social-awareness is the ability to interpret other peoples’ body language and emotions. If I were offered a full-time job out of high school, I would reject it and attend college until I received my bachelor’s degree. I may make more income at a job out of high school, than a student, but that will not be the case in the long run. People that have bachelor's degrees typically have much higher salaries than people with only a high school diploma. Therefore, I am successful at delaying gratification as I make the rational decision to attend college for a better income. There are several coping mechanisms that I use to deal with anger, anxiety, and depression. I personally use a slow breathing exercise to deal with anxiety and anger. The breathing exercise entails laying on my bed, placing a hand on my chest an abdomen and inhaling through my nose for three seconds. I do this exercise for five minutes everyday and have noticed I am less prone to anger and anxiety. As for depression, I take fish oil to remediate my symptoms. The thing about depression is that there isn’t a single cure for it. Every individual requires different treatments to address
