There are three primary areas of learning and development within the current early education framework, these include language and communication, physical development and personal social and emotional development. These are the most important areas on which observations and progress reports will be based from birth onwards, building these up will allow children to develop the skills for the secondary areas of learning: maths, literacy, understanding the world and expressive arts and design. Although the secondary areas of learning and development are officially tracked from age two, we can still make observations and track the development in these areas when children are younger
• Communication and language: this area tracks children’s listening and attention, understanding and speaking. This area focuses on developing language experiences for children, creating opportunities for their skills to grow in a rich environment learning to speak and listen. It allows children to understand how to express themselves and feel comfortable in doing and strengthens their attention span. Children will have coordination, control and movement, they will strengthen their bodies and build their muscles. This area allows children to keep active. It also allows children to understand their health, children will be encouraged to feed themselves, go to the toilet and wipe their noses, preparing them to become independent with their self-care. Children will also be educated about healthy food choices for example learning about their 5 a day.
