In the words of M Scott Peck, “By far the most important form of attention we can give our loved ones is listening… True listening is love in action.” The importance of listening to what others have to say is great deal, it is one of the most common ways humans interact with one another. It is also one of the many skills that is considered to be necessary in life, especially when it comes to communicating with someone important such as your loved ones. Listening isn’t utterly about being there, but it is also about support and showing how much you care.
For example, Patrick Sullivan states that, “college success depends on establishing strong working relationships with professors, college staff, and fellow students. Such relationships are built… with strong listening skills… good listeners are also able to suspend an interest in themselves and focus instead in respectful ways on what others think and feel.”. He says this because being able to listen and hear what others tell you helps you to emphasize and understand them. If you do not understand what is being told to you, you can not
This means to listen to what someone is saying to you, not only to hear the words, but to hear the message behind it (Porritt 1984.) An example of this is a nurse trying to find out why a patient is behaving aggressively. For a nurse who is not participating in active listening, they may brush it off as the person’s personality, ‘Oh look Mr Brown is being unpleasant to the nurses again’. Whereas a nurse who is participating in active listening may come to the conclusion that he is behaving this way out of anxiety about an upcoming procedure. Research also shows that by using reflective listening techniques it can improve a patient’s satisfaction, as they are more likely to feel supported by the practitioner (Pollak et al. 2011.)
individual, thereby keeping other staff informed and aware of current situations within the workplace. Also it is important that the information is recorded, as it may be called upon for legal reasons. All communications are confidential, and on a “need to know”, basis. 2.1 Demonstrate how to establish the communication and language needs, wishes and preferences of individuals.
Effective communication is a way of communicating with others to ensure they understand in a positive manner and the information given is quick and easy to understand depending on each individual. It is important that the way we communicate can be effective to all ages, abilities, cultures and the backgrounds of individuals. The way we communicate to each other is different and also can set boundaries. When communicating to children it is important that first of all we make them feel comfortable by getting down to their level, for example sitting on the carpet with them.
For children and young people to develop positive relationships it is crucial for adults to model effective communication in the classroom. As a teacher or teaching assistant, you have the platform to facilitate social learning and lead by example. One of the main reasons why effective communication is important, is because it makes children feel happy and comfortable at school, and in your presence. Not only will this help children to thrive in a learning environment, but will also filter through to their lives at home and outside of school.
According to Carlina Rinaldi (2006), to listen is to be open to others and to what they have to say, is to consider others as subjects that contribute to shared research that each person develops about the meaning of everyday experiences. Listening requires an in-depth understanding of events, situations, ideas, and is free of judgment and prejudices. Listening is a reciprocal process that involves the listener and the one that communicates, recognizes the right to participation of children, teachers and parents, legitimizing their theories and interpretations of the surrounding world (Lino,
Having good communication skills is not only important in the work place, communication skills plays a huge role in life. Every relationship has to have good communication. Friendships, the work environment, and marriages are just some examples to where communication and listening is crucial. I believe this unit has great leaders and we
Active listening is a crucial component to have when it comes to strengthening our interactions with others and the meaning and feelings that all parties take away. Particularly as individuals, we are very aware of how others engage with us and I believe we all have a sense of being able to deduce whether or not we’ve genuinely been heard when talking with someone. Active listening doesn’t consist of perfecting one or two skills, but instead involves an array of skills that we can use to strengthen our practice and engagement with clients. In this journal, I will be discussing several active listening skills that I used effectively, as well as a few that I had more challenges with, during a 15-minute interview with a close friend of mine.
The reason why I choose Martin Luther King Jr. as a leader is because he changed segregation. He wanted each of us to be equal and not be segregated. He wanted us to come together as one not as enemies but as friends/family. He just wanted us to change our ways of segregation and become equal with each other. If he can change a lot of people about segregation than he is a great leader to me.
According to author Barry R. Cournoyer in his book "The Social Work Skills Workbook," active listening involves the combination of talking and listening skills to show clients that you are an active and collaborative participant in treatment and helps convey empathy for your client's problem or situation. During active listening, you use mirroring techniques to paraphrase and reflect back to a client what he or she has just said. . (Miller, 2015) Before I did the interview I usually cut into someone’s statement and then they could not complete what they were saying. Some of this was evident in my interview and so next time I will have to try and ensure that the client is finish speaking or ask if they were finish speaking so has to show that I was actively listen.
Task oriented listening intently is to understand the information so you can make A on the test. One or two of these guidelines can be very helpful to have a good listening habit. The importance of having an interest in conversations plays a key role. If you are listening to, be knowledge of the information, it can be good to build a defense. If someone actually wants to learn, they will ask a lot of questions till they grasp the information.
Basically, you should listen twice as much as you talk. Besides making the speaker feel valued, it also makes you, as a listener, seem reliable and courteous. Most importantly, listening more than talking helps us learn and grow as individuals, because you can learn from what others have to say, and are also exposed to various thoughts, ideas, and experiences. Through effective listening we learn to ask better questions, and are given room to read and understand body language, which can be very beneficial to all types of relationships. Listening also helps you understand your responsibilities across various levels of your life, and improves the overall quality and communication in your both, your social and personal
Listening is a crucial part in communication that allows us to become more effective and productive in our personal lives and also in a professional setting like in school. As a student at UC Davis, listening is essential in order to obtain success in my classes as I must listen to my professor’s lectures in order to comprehend the class material. By examining 4 listening practices and putting them into action helped me become a better listener during lectures and become more efficient and productive in my classes. The first listening concept from the articles that I chose to do was to prepare ahead of time.
This will help to communicate in different situation. As a leader from one person to hundred persons (live or on TV, radio, internet) are watching or listening, it’s very difficult to stand in each of them expectation. Because each of them have their own perception about your speaking. So you must developed negotiation skill in vast sense in term to win a situation and make sure that you know your bottom line.
