Effective communication is a way of communicating with others to ensure they understand in a positive manner and the information given is quick and easy to understand depending on each individual. It is important that the way we communicate can be effective to all ages, abilities, cultures and the backgrounds of individuals. The way we communicate to each other is different and also can set boundaries.
When communicating to children it is important that first of all we make them feel comfortable by getting down to their level, for example sitting on the carpet with them. This will make the child feel at ease and comfortable to communicate with you. This will also show the child that you are listening and are being attentive to them. All children need to feel confident in communicating to an individual or as group this will encourage the child to get involved in more and will develop and grow their self esteem.

When communicating with young people the communication or language used may need to be adjusted from the way we communicate to children in some areas, this is because some young children may have increased communication barriers, be more sensitive, or may have different behavioural aspects. Young people need to feel accepted and valued as the individual that they are so by communicating and listening to them will increase their trust in you, and giving them more confidence to giving you their opinions meaning they will be able to engage with you more. It is important to communicate with young people in a positive manner as this will demonstrate the correct way in the way we communicate to each other and to prevent any negative or aggressive barriers.
