Isn’t it startling that between 2000 and 2011 extreme athletes suffered about four million injuries? Isn’t it even more mind boggling that some of those injuries belong to kids? Kids competing in life altering sports, with adults, is becoming a global pandemic. Children all over the world are deciding to compete in extreme sports. Why would kids risk their lives to do something they love? Well, some do it for the thrill, but others do it because they aren’t afraid of taking risks. According to, “The Science of Thrill-Seeking” by Jennifer Dignan, “scientists say that your willingness to take risks increases during your teenage years.” This means that the older you get, the more likely you are to take big risks. Jett Eaton is an extreme athlete, who does skateboarding. One day he tried to master a trick, the “nine”. On his last attempt of the day, he fell and nearly died. According to the article, “Should Kids Do Extreme Sports?”, because of this one fall Jett had suffered, “a fractured skull, a concussion, and a bruised brain. He also had a seizure caused by the trauma to his brain.” (21-22) But this isn’t all that has happened to the 19-year-old. “At this point, he’s had 10 concussions, five seizures, and six broken bones, and has punctured his spleen—twice.”(22) Ten concussions can leave you with a fatal brain disorder, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). Could all of this been avoided if he had thought about what was going to happen before
