The legal age to be considered to be an adult was originally 21, but in the late 90’s it was dropped down to 18 (“Toomela”). There were many reasons as to why this happened and majority of the U.S population wanted the legal age of adulthood to drop to eighteen. No one really looked at the long term consequences of this decision because the short-term effects favored this decision. At that time the majority didn’t knew why and how it would affect them in the long run. Looking back at it, most people regret changing that age limit. Now there are a lot of people out there with different reasons as to why it should be changed to 25. The reasons I think the legal age of adulthood in America should be raised to 25 is because a human brain isn’t …show more content…
Looking at the stats, it is proven that the drug abuse rises after the age 18 (“National Institute on Drug Abuse”). It’s the thought that most teenagers get after they turn eighteen. They are considered an adult now and legal to smoke. That feeling of being an adult force them to explore more into drug use. Now that you are eighteen you are legal to smoke which means after a while you will move on from smoking to different things. Your body will get used to the one drug and crave for another. Using drugs this early in your life can affect your brain in many ways. It isn’t fully developed which means that it isn’t good for harmful drugs. Raising this age would also raise the legal age to smoke which will lead to less drug use among teenagers. For example, even though the legal age to drink in U.S is 21, most people start drinking after the age 18. The main reason this happens is because they are considered as an adult. This leads to them thinking if they are considered as an adult, they are mature enough to drink too. The human brain is still a working process, allowing it to get exposed to drugs can change their mind process stuff. This can also lead to them being a drug user later in their lives …show more content…
This will lead to more people being employed and less homeless people. Kids would be able to focus on their studies more because some of them live on their own and have to provide for themselves after the age 18. Advantage of being considered an adult at 25 would mean that you would still be living with your parents, so you get to focus on your studies more and your parents support you. As of right now students are living on their own and then have to work to pay for college which leads to less time to study. Also the student loans would decrease and it would be easier to pay for college (“Should the Age of Majority Be Raised to 21?”). It would also potentially cause the amount of homeless people to decrease because kids would get a chance to mostly focus on studies and and think about their future rather then worrying about their financial welfare. Also more people would get a chance to go to college instead of working 40 hours a week without a college degree making just enough to live life as an 18-year adult. So I mostly agree if the age was moved to 25 the unemployment rate would decrease cause more kids would have the time to go college and actually focus on study and be able to get a decent job and not end up
