1. Statement of the Problem We are in the age of social media and communicating online. Children and teenagers all over the world spend the majority of their day online, texting, and on social media apps. With children and teens now growing up communicating mostly through their phones and computers it can create problems. These problems can include weak social skills and higher social anxiety when confronted with people. With technology also comes the danger of online harassment and cyber bullying. Growing children and teens are getting to comfortable behind their screen and avoiding face-to-face conversations.
2. Delineation of the Problem It is clear that the growing generation is addicted to social media and their technology. 22 % of the teenagers log into their preferred social networks more than ten times per day (Elda Tartari, 2014). Technology is becoming the main way of communication for teens and this may be affecting the way they communicate outside of the Internet. Both of these articles explained the positives involved and the risks associated with social media. The benefits that were focused on were valuable support, communication, socialization, health information, and learning opportunities. The main risks that were focused on were sexual behaviors, cyber bullying, online sexual harassment, parental relationships, and the problems with cell phones at schools. These risks have to be taken into consideration because the consequences of these risks are suicide, anxiety, depression, poor academics, delinquency, physiological problems, and loss of relationships.
