Throughout my life, I have been quite active in several organizations. The first club I joined was the Hamlet Handy Helpers 4-H Club. As my project, I rented a farm and raised corn and soybeans with the goal to earn enough money to pay for my college education. I have learned a lot about business, finance, and agronomy through my 4-H projects. I have also learned how to confidently deliver speeches during the club meetings. By running the club meetings as president for many years, I acquired various leadership skills. Then in high school, I joined FFA my freshman year. The closest co-op to me is the Farm Services (FS) in Reynolds. Farmers who purchase crop inputs, such as seed and fertilizer, benefit from cooperatives because they are able to get great products from a local distributor. The farmers are also at an advantage because the cooperatives can provide personalized services and expertise to help their customers. The convenient and quality services provided by a Co-op contribute to the local farmer’s profitability. This leads the farmer to have extra funds to hire more help, keeping more jobs local. In the same way, cooperatives also create local employment for people with a passion for agriculture, by creating needed jobs. Additionally, cooperatives give patronage checks to the customers who do business with them. No other form of business directly shares their excess profits with their customers!
Since the cooperatives do not receive personal gains by cheating the farmers on hard to measure inputs, such as chemicals and fertilizer, farmers also feel cooperatives are a type of business they can trust. Since trust is very important to have when doing business with others, many farmers are drawn to working with cooperatives.
