I’ve always been inspired to help others and give back to the community. As early as 4th grade I raised enough money to go to an orphanage in Cameroon and donate clothes and toys to the children in person. In 6th grade I started selling my handmade crochet scarves to raise money for care packages for domestic violence victims. After I made the care packages I gave them in person to victims at the YWCA. Simultaneously I launched a petition on change.org in hopes for a law that protect children against emotional abuse. I met with Congressman Dan Kildee in person to discuss the petition and why emotional abuse was an issue. The recurring theme here is actively making change by doing it in person. Through my experiences in Key Club, USL, and Leadership I already feel more confident to lead others, serve the community, and relate to peers when it comes to important issues just by learning from past experiences in other clubs. Through this past year I have observed a lot from the clubs I have participated in. For example, Semester 2 of last year Key Club held a movie night fundraiser, but not many people showed up. People bought popcorn and left. Semester 3 of last year USL held a friendship building event and a lot of people showed. The difference between the two events was that one actively engaged the students and one did not. The event that actively engaged the students, had more students show up. What I concluded from that was if, in each event we encouraged students to do something hands on and not just sit there, maybe more people would be interested in coming. Leadership already involves students in projects like #EveryBodysHome and students were encouraged to burst the bubble and break the stigma about homeless youth. Our Silent Auction was a success and so was the Panel Discussion, but again not many people showed up. We did go around focus’ and tell people about the event but looking back I think telling people why they should come would inspire people to attend. In each focus we could have said a persuasive speech or showed a moving video that got people to care
