Since the beginning of time, faith has been a concept that many people rely on across the world. In varies places, people practice different religions and celebrate different gods and figures. Faith makes up a large portion of culture in different countries and it is something that a variety of people use as a foundation for their way of living. The concept of faith also refers to trust or confidence in something, whether it is in God, humanity, or other people. The Holocaust was a time of persecution, oppression, and a test of faith for the Jewish people. Since they were separated from their families and forced into concentration camps, many people relied on faith for hope. In The Book Thief, Liesel’s father, Hans, was drafted to fight in the war, but he was allowed to return home after an accident. Due to the absence of Hans, Liesel felt an emptiness in her life because she had become very close to him. The return of her father restored her faith not only in humanity, but in the outcome of the war that was being fought. Another positive moment for Liesel was when she brought snow downstairs to Max so he could experience the weather. This was an act of kindness she performed and because of this, “It was the beginning of the greatest Christmas ever. Little food. No presents. But there was a snowman in their basement.” (Zusak 213) Liesel’s faith in her friendship with Max is displayed through this moment, where the two were able to make the most of their situation and become closer friends. In the autobiography, Night, Eliezer Wiesel and his family were moved from their home to another ghetto in their town, where they lived together for a short time. Though they were forced to leave home, the family focused on the positive sides of the situation. The Wiesel’s were relieved that they were still together and they thanked God for their luck. In times of optimism and happiness, where a person is at peace, it is proven that all kinds of faith are necessary during these
