The Fall of Rome Rome was a powerful empire during the time of the Pax Romana. But, after the last of the five good emperors, Marcus Aurelius, the empire was nearing its end as it had been badly weakened by many factors. Eventually, Rome fell because of its political strains, the army not being prepared, and low social morale. Rome had many political strains that weakened the empire. Dishonest leaders in Rome focused less on debate and compromise and more on forcing them to get their way. Additionally, government officials provided poor leadership, which caused political injustice. This frequent change made the government unstable and weak. It would also give people outside the Roman Empire the message that Rome was failing and easy to invade. After the invasions of the Germanic tribes, several of them held high positions in the Roman government. In AD 476, a Germanic general named Odoacer seized control and took over the government, making no Roman emperor rule from Rome for almost 15 years. Rome’s army and people were so severely unprepared and negligent that it led to external invasions and disruptions to the economy. Before the year 400 CE, foot soldiers wore breastplates and helmets. However, due to negligence, the parade grounds and the soldier’s armor were abandoned. So, while the soldiers were fighting the Goths, they got seriously injured. There was also a lack of enforcement of the draft of new soldiers. Many politicians, bureaucrats, cooks, and slaves escaped this. This also affected the economy because many soldiers and invaders attacked farms and disturbed trade, causing a rise in food prices due to shortages. People even lost their jobs. Roman society had suffered since many citizens no longer honored the traditional values of duty, courage, and honesty. Some common people in Rome even enjoyed the Hun’s rule because they treated them fairly, making people stop wanting to fight for Rome and eventually leading to its decline. People considered life after being conquered to be better than life under the rule of the Roman Empire. This was because the condition of Roman citizens during the time of peace was worse than in war. A rich criminal would not be punished for their crimes, but for a poor man to break the law, they would have to go under the legal penalty. This implies that to get away with a crime, a person has to pay a bribe, causing social injustice. Another reason was that the law and constitution of Rome were fair, but it was lamented that the governors, not possessing the spirit of former generations, were ruining the state. Rome had fought through many invasions while it was declining. Because the army did not wear any armor, Rome was considered weak and easy to invade.
