In my English 1020 class during summer 2015, my writing style was continuously tested along with my ability to understand and evaluate each aspect of assigned projects. There were four projects that were assigned in this class to improve our skills in writing, reading and researching. Those four projects were an annotated bibliography, definition argument paper, genre analysis and rhetorical analysis. Each of these papers was based on our choice of a fan community and my choice was Rajinikanth, an Indian actor. I was pleased with my choice as it was interesting to learn how fan community works and what fan community needs to be active in order for them to consider as a discourse community. For example, I looked up academic sources and also Rajinikanth’s fan sources. Throughout the semester, there were many opportunities to use different reading techniques, in which one was reading Swales’ definition of a discourse community. It was the academic scholarly writing that was very formal and specialized compared to simple English that we use every day. In addition, he used a lot of difficult terminology that I had not seen before or knew the meaning of. Swales introduced six characteristics of the fan community. For instances, in the second project of ‘Definition argument’, Swales’ second characteristics states, “A discourse community has mechanism of intercommunication among its members” (Swales, 471) and I interpreted as, “In other words, the only way to be part of a discourse community is to interact with each other. A community in which members share the same goals, but do not connect with other community members is not a discourse community” (Pandya 10). For example, I looked at social media account of Rajinikanth fans and with ability to interpret the way they are talking about him effectively and critically as well. As an example, Rajinikanth fan community used specialized language in tribute video and reaction videos, which are the different ways of communicating to reach the aim to be a part of discourse community. “In Rajinikanth fan community, there are many names that known as Rajinikanth, but most popular is ‘Thalaivar’. Whenever this name is used, it is referred to as Rajinikanth. This typical name is used in every fan website, but if people are not within the fan group, they would not know that Thalaivar means Rajinikanth. The name is referring to a ‘Superstar’, which is titled to Superstar Rajinikanth.” (Pandya 12) After watching many fan made videos and social accounts, I learned how to think critically and understand the language that Rajinikanth’s fan community use in order for them to share same goal to be a part of the discourse
