the ‘50s dress continued in the early ’60s, slightly above or at the knee hemline. pencil dress turned into shapeless “shift dress” in 1963.they were casual wear for home, running errands or going to the beach. They were not office friendly. The dress was too short. the dresses started becoming shorter and shorter.
The story takes place during the 1960’s, in a A&P grocery store in a small Massachusetts town. The grocery store was also not too far from the beach, and the girl beach attire was clearly inappropriate during that time. The tone of the story shows that during the 1960s, women did not dress in the way the girls were dressing. “The women generally put on a shirt or shorts or something before they get out of the car into the street” (Updike 165). Meaning, the girls’ attire was not allowed and should have been fully dressed before entering the store.

They began to wear short skirts and dresses in bright, bold colors. Women also began to dress in a more masculine manner and bobbed their hair.
In the 1950s there were many new trends/lifestyles that were brought upon the people of that decade. Rock ‘n’ Roll, poodle skirts, Alienation, etc. The 50s were full of music, dancing, and fun. On a more serious note, the 50s was when the Civil Rights movement for black Americans was beginning. Many more people started to stand up and start to fight against racial separation.

Fashions/ Styles of the 1920s While society changed during the 1920s, fashion changed along with it. After World War I, society skyrocketed. People began throwing parties, flying airplanes across the country, and traveling long distances in cars.
Fashion is one of the biggest change that occurred in the post-war years for women. Fashion for women changed in a positive and beneficial way. Many women wanted to be seen and treated the same as men were. A new hair style became popular called the “Bobbed Hair”. Women decided to cut their hair short to look similar to men.
