Is having “Fast Entertainment” a disadvantage to one’s life? Ever since its creation in 1983, the Internet has improved in astounding numbers; new technology has made it very easy to access the Internet, thanks to tech experts and computer scientists. In the article, “Fast Entertainment and Multitasking in an Always-On World” S. Craig Watkins, describes to the reader how quick access to the Internet affects people’s lives. He compares the use of the Internet with the consumption of candy and “snack culture”. Furthermore, Watkins explains the negative psychological effects of multitasking. It seems like an innocent habit, but it actually has a negative effect on one’s productivity and concentration on their assignment. For instance, Watkins says, “In an age of multiplying screens, constant connections, and content overload… human suffer severe lapses in attention” (Watkins 150). The quick access of the Internet makes people try to expand their attention to everything. When we multitask, we shift our attention to multiple tasks, which means our mind is not capable of processing two different types of information at once. Moreover, Watkins describes the result of a scientific study of the brain’s ability to handle multitasking. For example, “Continuous partial attention, or CPA… contributes to a feeling of [being overwhelmed], over-stimulation and to a sense of being unfulfilled,” (Watkins 150). People can’t be productive if they’re constantly distracted and feeling empty. People have the ‘necessity’ to pile their screens with as much information as humanly possible to simultaneously work on their assignments, which lowers their productivity.
