Page 1 of 3 Rough Draft In the 1932 novel Brave New World, author Aldous Huxley addresses the effects of technology and entertainment on a futuristic society. The book, written almost 100 years ago, is the perfect example of how people in society today are letting technology control our everyday lives. It has taken control over how people perceive information, learn, view content, time, everything. In today’s world, entertainment and technology invade every aspect of life. Technology and the world of entertainment have grown significantly in the past 20 years. The pandemic we faced from 2020 until now forced us to turn to technology and steer away from in-person connections. Most importantly, we have become oblivious to the real world. All of our news that we receive has gone through dozens of sources and paraphrasing before reaching us. By the time we encounter an article that we think has the true source, or the first insight on an instance we can’t help but doublethink. However, an even larger amount of humans believe what they read and watch at first glance without question. A huge effect that entertainment has played on the human mind is a constant need for a larger spectacle. Human nature, whether we like it or not, always craves the next big thing and if entertainment or technology is not providing that then we become bored. Entertainment has damaged people in so many ways. Many people use entertainment to escape the real world. In the Brave New World characters use a drug called “soma”. Soma, when taken in the recommended dose, gives the user a state of happiness and peacefulness. “The Good, the Bad, the Ugly”, makes the argument that technology , “makes life extraordinarily easier. Banking, shopping, and direct communication with other individuals and businesses are all simpler and faster.” Of course as a teenager in today's society I can see the impact the internet has on my generation, but as far as the rest of our society goes I can’t fully vouch for that. I think in this case that two things can be true at the same time. Entertainment can be engaging and educational, but it can also be damaging and destructive. I do know that the internet and social media are carefully curated, so we are never getting the whole story on any subject. Topics such as sex, drugs, murder, and violence have been romanticized through social media and television. In conclusion, the advancement of entertainment and technology is an undeniable change that has happened to society; there is nothing we can do to stop it. It causes more damage than benefit to us as a society. Brave New World was a scarily accurate prediction of what the world would be like a hundred years later. Humans are becoming so enveloped with their
