The more time goes by, the more people are becoming overweight, and it is such a widespread problem that it is considered to be an epidemic that needs to be fixed. Since the 70’s, it's becoming common to see overweight people due to several circumstances, one being the popularity increase of fast food in the 70’s and the portion increase in the 80’s. Nothing was really noticed until the 90’s, and nothing was done until the early 2000’s. There are lots of beliefs as to why there has been an increase in weight, and some common beliefs blame it on the portion sizes or the ubiquitous fast food restaurants. In today’s society, people are always moving at a fast pace with little free time, so fast food seems like the perfect meal since it is ubiquitous and inexpensive. Daniel Weintraub, in The Battle Against Fast Food Begins in the Home, hopes to help the readers by stating, “Before we start talking about banning fast food, let’s do more to encourage personal responsibility”(16). People decide to get fast food for its convenience, but what’s the real cost if when eaten, it causes obesity or obesity related diseases. Some people think that if the calories are burned off, then no harm is done which isn’t true, when fast food or any other unhealthy food is consumed it can still cause obesity related diseases. Even though someone looks fit, if that person eats unhealthy foods, that person is still susceptible to obesity related diseases which is what people do not realize. People should make the changes themselves rather than wait for someone else to do it. The sooner that people begin to make healthier life choices, the less damage done to the body, and the more time and money people can save on medical expenses later on in life. People treat other things such as cell phones with care and get the best things for the phone, but if they can do this for a phone then why can people not do the same for the body, the body after all is more important than a cell
