The destiny of an individual is events that happen during a life time ultimately leading to the future. During World War II young Elie Wiesel and his family become a victim of the Nazis’ mission to exterminate all Jews by forcing them into concentration camps. Elie’s life of studying Kabbalah and his family’s simple lifestyle running their business is quickly replaced by the need to survive. Being forced into the concentration camp was not his choice as he was a victim of fate. It was fate that lead to his family being forced into the concentration camp as it was not something they could choose. Throughout his time in the camp, Elie and his father face the choice to keep living and resisting or be overcome by death. Elie chose to continue resisting fate and resisting the temptation to end his suffering. By not giving up and making this critical decision Elie was able to survive the Holocaust. With harsh conditions, death was something everyone suffered. Many signs in the camp say, “Warning! Danger of Death” (40), Elie found this statement ironic because “there [wasn’t] a single place where one was not in danger of death” (40), making death a very common fate of the prisoners. If Elie had let fate shape his destiny he would have fallen victim to the many dangers around him, and died. Another time Elie defied fate is during selection. Even though Elie was skinny and weak, he chose to continue fighting which shaped his destiny. He took the advice of the Blockälteste and “ran as if [he] had the devil at [his] heels!” (71), to increase his odds of survival. Elie didn't have to run, but it was his choice to continue trying defying death and the consequences of him losing faith. Other prisoners like Akiba Drumer,“felt the first chinks in his faith, he lost all incentive to fight and opened the door to death” (77).
