In the very beginning of the book, Feliciano is characterized as a man fighting for a cause during the battles with the rinches and expresses his hatred toward them. Feliciano is later left with taking care of Gualinto—the son of Gumersindo—and his mother because of the death of his father, the family had to move to a new location, to run from the dangerous environment they lived in. As Gualinto is slowly growing up, Feliciano tries his best to provide for the family by working constantly and later puts Gualinto in school. However, Feliciano is an excellent role model because he establishes that, in order to be successful in life, one must be humble, intelligent, and diligent in his work; just like Gualinto’s father Gumersindo. Ever since coming to Jonesville, Feliciano was real careful about ever intervening into any activities that did not involve him. The book later features Gualinto going to school and actually doing the opposite and getting himself into a lot of mischief. Although, most of the troubles just consequently happened to Gualinto because of his native race and as a result, it made him strive to do better in school. Now, this intellectual trait can be obtained from his father; Gumersindo was a strange man who never blamed the rinches for any of the troubles back in their native country. Uncle Feliciano later took up this trait and passed it down to Gualinto to show that his father was a man like no other. Feliciano expressed to Gualinto that Gumersindo’s death involved him having such a big heart that it burst and instantly killed him. Theoretically, this is not true, but Gumersindo did have a big heart; he wanted the people of his race and the rinches to establish peace amongst each other. Once again, Feliciano is constantly working and striving to earn as much as he can to support the family of Gumersindo’s. The idea that Feliciano is diligent can be read heavily throughout the book because first, it’s a man taking care of another man’s family; a honorable responsibility and what a sacrifice to make. Another idea can be the compassion that was passed onto Feliciano by Gumersindo; Gualinto’s father was extremely passionate and thus, Feliciano learns through Gumersindo that in order to achieve the idea that he wanted—in creating peace between the rinches and the natives—Feliciano needed to be constantly diligent. It might not be Feliciano’s intentions now to establish peace between the rinches and the natives of his home country, but Gumersindo said to pass his idea onto his son and teach him that the rinches are not bad
