The issues that Kilbourne is attempting to attack are highly sensitive ones. Therefore, it would follow that her essay would appeal to pathos more than usual. The violence that Kilbourne is talking about affects nearly all women and is something that demands attention. It is true when Kilbourne says, “Most of us become numb to these images, just as we become numb to the daily litany in the news of women being raped, battered, and killed” (430). While they are certainly important, all the statistics and data can appear disconnected from the reality of real life abuse women endure.
Institutional violence goes beyond violence towards women, however, a majority of the institutionalized violence happens towards women. Media, sports culture and pornography all multi-billion dollar industries have the potential to lead individuals to commit violence acts towards women. The media with regards to advertisements and commercials, present women in an objectifying manner and sometimes contain words that may hint at sexual mindset. Athletes are taught to be tough, however that mindset does not always stay on the field. Some athletes that have the potential to continue professionally attract a lot of attention from fellow classmates and fans all around the country.
In the article “Juveniles’ Life Without Parole: An Overview,” it states that “80% of girls reported histories of physical abuse, and 77% of girls reported histories of sexual abuse.” (Rovner) This technically means that, what happened in these girls’ past could have caused them to get sentenced to life without parole. With the rise of civilization also came the rise of patriarchy-based societies and the slow decline of the importance of women in society. For the longest time the history of the world has been written by men who have been the head of the patriarchy and have forgotten the role of women in history. It is important to realize that women do in fact have a place at the table with men when it comes to importance in history, and are not just the ones cooking and serving the meal. It is women who tasked with raising the next generation. By looking at women of the past, people of the future can learn and evolve to fight oppression and gain their own power.
This gender bias is not just limited to theoretical level, but it prevails in every aspect of society women are seen and treated as subordinate to men. Women's place in family, the basic institution of society, is always seen as secondary and marginalized. Traditional family institutions set men as head of the family whereas women are designed to play secondary roles of house-keeping and child rearing. As it happens in most of the Hindu culture where men are always entitled to authority and allowed to dominate over the women of the family and in the most cases it is hereditary in nature.
So, can women no matter their sexuality coexist with religious, cultural and social norms? Can women and men be seen as the same, will society ever be able to accept this? Women would like to believe that one day these questions would no longer be asked, women have made tremendous strides towards finding their own sense of importance, and acceptance in our society; whether it be their right to vote or even bigger woman finally being seen as a person, these are things that (a white) man has never had to fight towards. They do not believe a woman can be both. But, women can be both smart and pretty and know how to party and club and be studious and productive. Women are more than they are viewed as by society.
