When comparing and contrasting the Catholic imagination and Protestant imagination in the films Field of Dreams, Stranger than Fiction, All That Jazz, and Dogma, the way God is represented and the elements these films utilize can help in determining what imagination each film is portraying. Field of Dreams and Stranger than Fiction represent the Protestant imagination and they do this by distancing the God figures from the main characters in these movies. The films All That Jazz and Dogma represent the Catholic imagination by making the God figures close to the main characters, as well as more sensual with the characters then the other movies.

God is represented using the Protestant imagination in this film because the God figure is very distant from the other characters. The God figure, Karen Eiffel, is an author who seems to be in complete control of everything the main character, Harold Crick, does in his life. Whatever Karen writes Harold to do or experience, happens. When Harold discovers that this is happening and that his impending death is fast approaching, he seeks out to find this author. Karen has no idea that she is controlling this man’s life, until she meets him. Even when Harold and Karen meet, Karen does not want anything to do with Harold. She distances herself from him and does not want to believe that she controls everything in his life, or the lives of her previous characters. The Catholic belief that God is close to mankind is true in this film because God and God-like characters are all around and interacting with the characters, and they look and act just like humans too. For example, God is missing after going to New Jersey in human form to play skee ball. The film also shows God being more sensual than the Protestant imagination believes God can be with the Muse of Creative Inspiration working as an exotic dancer. This is representing God as being close to humans, and interacting with them is normal ways. These metaphors of God being normal are also valid being of the Catholic beliefs and imagination, even if many may not agree that they are valid.
