“76% of American adults online use networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest, as of July 2015, up from 26% in 2008” (procon.org). Mostly everyone you talk to or ask has or has had a social media account at one point in their life, whether that account may be to communicate with family members or just to post personal information. Many people talk about the many benefits that social media has created for society, however they do not see the negative effects that it has brought upon the world.

It has opened up new ways of communication all around the world, and makes it easier to connect with people across the country. However, it has closed communication with one another, when people go out with friends or family, they tend to be on their phones most of the time communicating with others. For example, there has been many times when I go out to eat with my family and my brothers are on their phones most of the time communicating with their friends through social media instead of enjoying their time with family. Some people think that the internet has made people lack social skills. “With an overwhelming trend among adolescents and young adults toward the reliance on technology for communication, it is speculated that the decline of face-to-face interaction will result in decreased ability to handle real-life conflicts” (Drussell). Since people now just text or email everything, trying to solve a conflict can be frightening to them. I know of many people who would rather talk to someone through the computer or phone because they do not want to face them in person. In many ways it is just easier because they don’t have to have contact with the people and they don’t see how they react to that certain thing right away, they can somehow just imagine it.
