Both Britain and France extended their rule over fast swaths of land in Africa. British colonial policies in Kenya and French colonial polices in Algeria show greater similarity between the two great powers than differences. In Kenya, British rule was imposed by force of arms. The massive might of British military power forced the region into submission, and allowed for a sizable white settler population of around 30,000 to establish itself in the country (White, 2015, p. 195). A strong colonial government was created in Kenya to both provide adequate governance for the white population and to better suppress the local Africans. The colonial government in Kenya imposed laws reflecting the strong racist sentiments held throughout the empire. Laws where drafted to remove local ethnic groups from lands desired by British settlers. British rule hinged on economic exploitation. The colonial government forced Africans into wage labor, mainly on British owned plantations, which limiting their ability to engage in local agricultural production (White, 2015, p. 195).
