Purpose and Rationale
Over the past few decades, Finland has been applying fundamental modifications in the school system. Some of these modifications include the elimination of the standardized tests for students, a rigorous training for teachers, and restructuring of the grading system, among others. Finland also established a new curriculum and new legislators back in the 70s. All these changes were aimed at coming up with a new approach to how young generations were educated. The success of the reformed education system has made Finland a leader in educational achievement among OECD countries. Unlike in Finland, the US has experienced a setback in the school system. US students rank far below Finnish students in the PISA test (Aho et al. 131). The setbacks in education can be associated with the inability of the government to nationalize the education system. The education system in the US is governed individually by states, leading unequal requirements and unequal funding by the federal government. Adopting the principles and standards of the education system used by Finland can help the US to revamp the school system in the US, and give students a better chance of succeeding. This research will aim at identifying the main factors that have contributed to the success of the Finnish education system and how they differ from the US system. The research will also investigate why high school graduates are more in Finland than in the US. This is not the case in the US, where students learn how to pass tests. The American school system categorizes students and undermines their abilities. This affects the self-confidence of the students and the motivation to learn, especially when a student ranks low. The curriculum content is also outdated as compared to that of Finland. The education system should be revamped to cater for all the individual needs of the students. It should also be updated to reflect the learning needs of the 21st generation
