Working in public safety can be a very rewarding career. People have always tried to compare fire vs police and which one is better. There are many differences in the jobs and duties they perform and the scope of their training: yet even still, they have strong similarities as well. Both departments are there to protect the public they serve. It can be difficult to understand how both jobs can be so similar, yet so different at the same time. I have had the opportunity and privilege to work as both a firefighter and a police officer and can attest the jobs have very different tasks and goals. Although every fire department is different, some of the similarities you can expect are to wake up and clean the station, then typically, depending on time and volume of calls, there will be time to work out. In the afternoons during your free time there will be training of some sort. Working patrol as a police officer you can expect from most departments to get an hour of workout time at the beginning or end of your shift. Typically you will work a beat with your partner either riding double, taking one patrol car, or riding singles and taking two cars. You will respond to calls for service. A firefighter wears personal protective equipment (PPE), often referred to as turnouts or bunker gear. These uniforms and helmets, along with their steel-toed insulated boots, protect firefighters from the extreme heats they can face. Police are easily recognized by their uniforms, which often say police. Their PPE includes wearing a bullet proof vest and a duty belt filled with the numerous tools to effectively do their job. These duty belts tools have everything from their department issued weapon, cuffs, radio, and more than one non-lethal tool. Vehicles used by these public servants differ quite a bit. Firefighters roll around in a big shiny fire engine or truck with an aerial ladder. These vehicles carry all sorts of tools and equipment to be utilized for various types of calls they could be responding to.
