On September 13th, 1967 a fire took place in a church in Windrixville, there were some children playing in the church when it caught fire, there teenage boys saved their lives. There was a school picnic planned that day of the fire. Some of the students were disobeying their teachers. Those children were the ones in the fire. Three teenage boys showed up soon to become heroes.
Imagine being an immigrant with no money to provide for yourself or your family. You have to turn to work in a Shirtwaist Factory in order to make a living. While working inside of the Shirtwaist Factory you notice there are many injuries that occur from the machinery, you are being lowly paid for working extended hours, including holidays, and the bosses lock the exit doors to prevent theft by the workers. Many of the immigrant women became upset and decide to go on strike, for better working conditions. As a result the owners of the company ignore the women's strike causing the women to have to go back to working unfair jobs until the fire occurs.
Through out the history of the United States, a number of incidents and disasters have occurred to influence safety and protection. In the aftermath of these events, valuable lessons are learned and steps are taken to ensure nothing like that happens again. One such incident is the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, one of the most influential and horrifying incidents in United States history. The fact that both the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) and National Safety Council (NSC) trace their history back to this incident speaks to that. Sadly, the tragic events that unfolded during the Triangle fire were not surprising.
Could the fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory have been prevented? I am not going to answer that question just yet. Without assessing all of the information to prevent the making of unfounded accusations. First things first you may be asking yourself what a Triangle Shirtwaist is. A triangle shirtwaist is a type of blouse that many women wore in the early 1900's.
Throughout Zac Unger’s memoir Working Fire the Making of a Fireman he struggles to find a place within the fire station and among coworkers. Unlike many of the fellow recruits who spent years preparing to become a firefighter, Unger an Ivy League grad simply responded to a bus stop ad. After realizing that most recruits were either former military, tradesmen or other firefighter’s kids Unger “Mostly I just stayed quite, tried to down play my existence. I figured if I could just make it through the academy without being called out as a fraud, I’d end up a firefighter like the rest of them”(Unger, 22-23). This distinction between Unger and the rest of the recruits was seen as something to be ashamed of, something to hide away.
T oday, October 8th 2016 is the 145th anniversary of The Great Chicago Fire. The Great Chicago Fire was a massive fire that lit 4 square miles of the city. A major factor in the Great Chicago Fire was the wood. Almost the entire city was built of wood, and wood is very flammable.
The Montpelier Fire Department is responsible for providing for protection and emergency medical services to the city of Montpelier, state capital and anchor of central Vermont commerce. Though the listed population for the city is just above 8,000, the daytime number swells to roughly twice that, as state employees, business owners and tourists work in and visit our city. Thus, though our relatively small full-time fir department is rooted in a traditional Vermont town, it also is now charged with facing bigger-city challenges. These challenges include numerous high-rise structures in our coverage area, many of which serve the core of Vermont state government, including the State Capital, the Governor’s office, the Vermont Supreme Court, most
Causes of Cancer in Firefighters As I began my career in the fire service the thought of cancer never crossed my mind. As you wear all of your personnel protective equipment you feel bullet proof. Your equipment is designed to protect and keep me safe which it does, but our complacency is our down fall. When we respond to an incident a fire for example the biggest product of fire is smoke.
Firefighter Conrad and Jill enter. Jill is carrying a brown bag as well as two plastic bags. The room is a dark wood panel room with shag carpeting. There are two queen size beds. There are three pictures in the room, a bear in the woods, a fox in the woods and a fish swimming upstream.
NFPA applies the adage in the sense that most of its operations are aimed at preventing. It is responsible for more than 380 standards and codes that govern and regulate how structures are designed, build and serviced. These standards are designed to reduce the effects and risk that arise due to fire. They provide the appropriate criteria for servicing, installation and processing in many countries but most important, in the USA. These codes govern how engineers design and construct buildings.
There is a shortage of people wanting to be firefighters while people are quitting firefighting, some ways to fix this is incorporating ways to deal with mental health, increase the wages, and going out and teaching the public about firefighting. Background Right now in the US there is a shortage of firefighters. Many firefighters are leaving for many reasons like retirement, stress, low pay, and many other reasons. At the same time, many fire departments are struggling to recruit firefighters.
Firefighter Flashlights Firefighters all over the world depend on several tools to fight fires, keep themselves safe, and protect others from harm. One of the tools they depend on is their flashlight. Firefighter flashlights must meet the standards that are required to do their jobs. The light output must be enough for them to be able to see through thick smoke, and they must hold up under high temperatures. If not, it could jeopardize their safety and the safety of others.
To serve and Protect The definition of a firefighter is “a person whose job is to extinguish fires”, however that just scratches the surface of the many responsibilities of a firefighter. A firefighter can fight a fire and also make an emergency medical call if need be. The work of a firefighter is dangerous, it can include collapsing buildings, emergency medical situation, and in extreme cases, even death.
Officers will be provided with body armor which is to be work=n at all times the officer is on duty. Most PPE is disposable, however used equipment must be disposed of properly. When PPE is removed it is to be placed in a designated area for storage, decontamination, or disposal. If contaminated with bodily fluid of unknown substance, the item must be placed in a plastic bag and sealed. A bio-hazard sticker is to be placed on the outside.
I was never interested in academics nor did I ever consider myself ever wanting to teach. In fact, I almost did not graduate high school. However, because I wanted to make my mother proud, and achieve my dream of becoming a firefighter I pushed myself to graduate high school. Saving someone’s life from a burning building, rescuing a teen from a car crash, or bringing a cat home to their owner after getting stuck on a tree. It all seemed great, but was I ready or would I ever be ready to see people in their worst days?
