An “American” is complex to define for the simple fact that America is structured through the melting pot theory in which different types of people integrate collectively as one. Individuals from all over the world come to a country like America because it is acknowledged for providing humans an improved and more suitable way of living. People are finally able to experience a more preferably life with better opportunities for themselves and their kids. America alone carries its own flaws but leaders from all over the world came to give their two points and either helped or corrupted the nation. Foner’s insights play into the contemporary debate because he helps individuals understands everything behind what they monomers are and what they really represent. The monuments that are here in present day society show how it only helped to maintain the racial boundaries America has made through the Dred Scott decision. Dred scott was a man who had enough of being poorly treated and wanted to be set free. Even though he lost his case in the court many people stood by him and supported his ideas while others wanted the continuation of slavery. In this case, he was able to start the civil war and in the long run slavery had finally come to a termination. Likewise, Foners explains to readers how Trump chooses to withhold statues and monuments that only bring that the dark periods America has faced. Ever since Donald Trump has been elected into presidency people like the Ku Klux Klan have started to act out again because of the ideas they share with
