Cadet Eric Wiggins Date: 18 September 2014 Course Name: Chem 100 Instructor: Captain Zuniga Section: M3A Identification of a Copper Mineral Intro Minerals are elements or compounds that are created in the Earth by geological processes. The method of isolating metals in a compound mineral is normally conducted through two processes.
As an extremely massive and busy mine, Kalgoorlie also produces noisy and boisterous sounds that cause noise pollution within the residents living nearby. Also, gold ores require sulphur that causes contamination of groundwater and the environment to drive themselves. The levels of greenhouse gases such as sulphur used at the Kalgoorlie mine have been reported by KCGM Performance Review Report ( 2015) to be constantly increasing. These increasing toxins harm the biodiversity which is present around the mining site and pose a serious threat to
According to the observations recorded, the metal ion Cesium is present in the “unknown samples”. Unknown sample number five produced a violet color when placed in the flame. Unknown sample number four produced an orange color when placed in the flame. Unknown sample number one produced a violet color when placed in the flame. This evidence supports the claim that the metal ion Cesium is present in the unknown samples according to table two, the Flame Spectra of the Alkali and Alkaline-Earth Elements.
Metal cations can be identified based on the colors they emitted off when heated in a flame.1 When atoms of the ions that were tested are excited, their electrons move up to higher levels of energy.2 When the electrons relax and return to the original states, they emit photons of specific energy creating wavelengths of light that produces colors.3 The test wire and Bunsen Burner were used to excite the solution in the crucible. The standard metal cations that were tested and their outcomes are as shown in Table 1.
It is also used in the technology industry as it is a very good conductor of heat- which devices like mobile phones require to function properly .Also, it is used in dentistry to make gold fillings which are a replica of human teeth. In conclusion, gold has been improvised to suit many of its applications in the society. To make gold more durable, companies also regularly concentrate it with metals such as copper and silver- which form strong alloys of itself ( BBC, Bitesize GCSE, Science, Metals and
“A painting showing an early factory plant shows that the smoke rising from the factory was black and full of coal ashes, affecting the air. Also, because the factory is next to water, it can be assumed that the factory has dumped into this water, causing it also to become polluted”(Document 3). Yes, wonderful products came from these factories; things like clothing and cars, but coal was being used to power these machines that produced. Black coal ash rose up into the sky and was being breathed in by the people and animals. Coal is not the best thing for people’s lungs.
Rapid Oxidation of Steel Wool Arby D. Dickert Western Governors University Rapid Oxidation of Steel Wool Abstract The rapid oxidation of steel wool involves an exothermic reaction of iron with oxygen. Due to the decrease in volume of the combustion products compared to the original sample, many students would expect the products would weigh less than the original sample. This investigation determines that the product weighs more than the sample and why this occurs.
Minerals 1. The minerals under the DRI for my age group would be calcium, potassium, sodium, copper ,iron, magnesium, phosphorous, selenium, and zinc. The mineral that comes below the DRI would be be potassium. However, it is not more than 80% below the DRI. However I did have a low potassium intake.
George i Whitlatch describes the value of manganese classified into chemical and metallurgical
Copper is also a very important element in the medical field. Also, the united states penny was originally made from pure copper. Finally, the Statue of Liberty did not always look green. Copper was the first element manipulated by humans. It is now, currently still a major metal industry.
James Baldwin’s short story entitled, “The Rockpile" portrayed a blended family in which I discovered themes of dominance, favoritism, rebellion, and alienation. The story introduces the reader to the rockpile within the first few lines which immediately shows that Roy has a desire to rebel against his parents rules. The author states Roy’s eagerness to play amongst the rockpile,“Roy felt it to be his right, not to say his duty, to play there” (15). In this short introduction I could immediately feel Roy’s fascination with the rockpile. The rockpile appeals to Roy not only because he is forbidden, but because he is adventurous and reckless.
Gold Though gold and silver were vital to European economies during the Age of Discovery, the continent had few natural sources of either. When Columbus reported that his newly found lands had deposits of precious metals, finding mineral currency became an incentive for further exploration and conquests, especially for Spain. In their quest for gold and silver for the Spanish crown, conquistadors Hernan Cortes and Francisco Pizarro brutally put an end to the Aztec and the Inca empires, respectively. Gold was also the driving force behind Juan Ponce de Leon's exploration of what is now Puerto Rico.
From Robin Hood’s Bay, the Cleveland Way ascends to the windswept heights of Ravenscar ‘the Town that never was,’ and visits the hidden cove of Hayburn Wyke with its striking twin waterfalls. The trail undulates up and down like a roller-coaster dropping down through green valleys and wooded dells to sea level before rising back to the cliff tops, with excellent coastal scenery throughout. The first written record for Robin Hood’s Bay was in 1536 when King Henry VIII’s topographer, John Leland, described it as ‘a fisher townlet of twenty boats’. However, the origin of its name is unknown, and there is no evidence that Robin Hood of Sherwood Forest fame ever visited the bay.
The rock cycle is extremely helpful and useful for scientists all over the world. These scientists use physical geology, which carefully focuses on how rocks form into other rocks (Doc. 2). Also, through the rock cycle, three types of rocks form, which are called igneous rock, sedimentary rock, and metamorphic rock (Doc. 1). The rock cycle is much like the water cycle, but it takes millions of years for a rock to form, wear down, and form again. Also, scientists need the rock cycle to watch how the rocks form overtime (OI).
Gold was discovered in Australia during The Australian Gold Rush in 1853 and the main part of the gold rush lasted for 25 years. The news about gold was spread quickly all around the world. Due to its value and wealth, gold was attracted Chinese immigrants and other nationalities such as European people. Chinese immigrants came to Australia to try to discover gold to get rich and make money. They had many difficulties during their migration and settling in Australia in order to achieve their dreams of having a better life.
