Forbidden love can be found in many works of literature as well as in real life. Forbidden love is when a person is not allowed to be in a relationship because of other people or society. Forbidden love can be found in Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare as one of the major themes of the story, but it can also be found in real life situations. The message conveyed through the theme, forbidden love, is represented in a passage from Romeo & Juliet, the article “These Countries Have Banned Valentine’s Day” and the song “Storybook Children” as a conflict with tradition and society that can lead to relationship conflicts between lovers or a realization that cultural norms must be challenged or even ignored. In Romeo and Juliet, it is known that in the story, the two families are enemies. That is an idea developed by the people in the city and it has become an accepted conflict. In spite of this idea, some people want to look beyond that and think that “Thou art thyself, though not a Montague” (Shakespeare 2.2:42). The fact that the two families are against each other, creates a conflict between lovers of the two different families. They want to move on from this idea, but the idea is embedded in their society, making it hard to continue. It can be seen as a recurring character in all of the sources, that although people can technically do whatever they want, society and traditions are holding them back. People want to be able to love each other, but since these ideas are a normal thing in society, it creates a major conflict, of forbidden love. This is one of the last resorts to being in a forbidden couple because it could lead to serious trouble. Some couples are so desperate to be together, they will try to ignore the rules and risk getting in trouble, all just to be with their partner. Some couples can be found that are so desperate, they are “buying roses from the black market for skyrocketing prices” (Srivastava). This is amazing that people are doing illegal things, just to show that they love their partner. By having the idea that love is not allowed in a society, it forces people to find new ways to show that they love someone.People have to be creative as well as sneaky to try and show their compassion. Additionally, by doing something of this magnitude, it shows that a person really loves their partner. They are risking many things, just to show that they are really in love with you. A similar risk-taking can be seen in Romeo and Juliet. Juliet wants to be with Romeo and “take all myself” despite the rules saying that she is not allowed to be with Romeo (Shakespeare 2.2:52). Juliet is saying that she doesn’t care anymore about the rules and just wants to be with Romeo. This just shows how much she really loves him; so much to take a risk and go against everything in that society.
