In the text it tells us that the island is Zaroff’s home, "It is a very great pleasure and honor to welcome Mr. Sanger Rainsford, the celebrated hunter, to my home. " Zaroff has been on the island much longer than Rainsford and knows it better as also said in the text, “So I bought this island and built this house, and here I do my hunting. The island is perfect for my purposes—there are jungles with a maze of trails in them, hills, swamps”. This makes it really unfair to Rainsford because not only can Zaroff go to his home anytime, he also knows the woods and island much

There are many points in the story where masterfully expanded moments capture all the fine sensory details of a scene; nevertheless, these points also contain captivating suspense to keep the story interesting.

Nicole Seong 10/20/17 English 1 Conflict within a Story Stories, in general, have five parts to them. The exposition, which is typically where the main characters are introduced and other background information. Then comes the rising action, and this is when the characters start to face the conflict of the story. Next would be the climax, and this is where the conflict is actually known and faced by the characters. In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, suspense is created through the use of foreshadowing, different points of view, and cliffhangers. Without suspense, the book would be boring and uninteresting to read. The author uses these three main techniques to keep the reader engaged. First off, Connell uses foreshadowing to create suspense by using appalling words to map out the near future, and by using dialogue. The author uses dreadful words like “dark” and “cannibal” to foreshadow the daunting future.
The setting is very necessary to support the plot of “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell because without having the story take place where is does, the short story is not believable. To begin, the location of the story is on an isolated island. Rainsford has no way to escape because there is nothing surrounding the island. He can not tell the authorities or anyone who is not on the island because “He was in a picture with a frame of water, and his operations, clearly, must take place within that frame” (11). As Rainsford thinks that to himself, he keeps in mind that he has to use his fortitude to survive on this island and defeat general Zaroff’s “game.”
(15)”. He shows obvious dread of the island in his conversation with Rainsford. These statements foreshadow Rainsford getting trapped on the island. They make the readers feel uneasy about the island and fear for Rainsford and the rest of the crew which builds suspense. Another instance of foreshadowing in “The Most Dangerous Game” happens when Zaroff and Rainsford are having their conversation at supper.
The mood of the story was spine-chilling and mystifying. The name of the island, “Ship-Trap” Island, itself gives off a daunting vibe to the reader. The author wanted his audience to feel as if they were there themselves which is why he added so many details. The details narrow the imagery in the audience’s heads to help them better grasp the plot in the story. If the author hadn’t been so descriptive in the story, we wouldn’t have been able to envision what the island was
If the story was not set on an island Rainsford would have no other choice than to walk back to General Zaroff’s house, which would most likely result in his death. The setting contributes to Rainsford’s growth as a character. Now he is feeling what it is like to be hunted, just as the animals he hunts feel. He is learning what it is like to be stranded and isolated in the woods, while fearing
