As a junior I was selected to attend the UC Davis COSMOS program. COSMOS is a four-week summer program organize to give educational experience to determined students. I devoted myself at learning as much as I could from the program which developed confidence, maturity, and understanding in my personal life. Through this, I realize how the world itself is replete with many different obstacles, and it is not as black and white as people usually see it in high school. COSMOS gave me insight into the microbiology of bacterial diseases, but also gave me tools for my post-high school
I was most engaged in this course when I was doing the research for this paper. Filtering through all the research and figuring out what is valuable information was the most exciting part for me. Additionally, finding information and connecting it to a suspect is the most satisfying part of my job. Writing the actual research paper has been the second most engaging thing during this course. It is difficult for me because I know I am not a great writer, but there are improvements in my writing since starting college.
As I sit in the basement of the Lilly Library, surrounded by friends who have become family in a few short months, covered in calculus and EQ notes, and listening to some Duke Ellington jazz music for my Music 101 class, I can’t help but reflect on what this year has meant to me and my development as a student, athlete, brother, friend, and person. I entered Wabash College not exactly sure what to expect; I knew it was going to be different, but I also knew that with change I wanted to keep an open mind that was ready to learn and grow. Freshman tutorial and especially enduring questions are two classes that have pushed my boundaries as a person, forcing me to question core beliefs and ideas that seemed previously engrained in my mind. Shipler’s writing made me look back on my life and feel compassion for those that interviewed. To read some of the struggles that working poor face daily was overwhelming like working odd hours at low rates like Caroline and how she decided to have her teeth removed to get dentures paid by the state only to find out how ill-fitting they were and she couldn’t wear them or life as migrant worker in the fields of North Carolina; which one of my co-workers is from a small town next to Mt. Olive. When I was talking to her about the chapter regarding her hometown area and the housing conditions where the migrant workers lived. What she described was similar to what Shipler stated if not a little worse. She made a point that made me think about it
I noticed that after I finished my time monitoring sheet that, there is absolutely no reason for me not to complete my studies at GCU. I’m always available because I don’t have a job or children to take care of my only responsibility are my dogs. So now that I start school my biggest priority will be to do my school work and turn it in on time. But I did notice that I waste a lot of time doing nothing but, I guess that’s good in a way because now I can replace the time slots that I’m doing nothing, with studying so I can make better grades.
Everyone needs to struggle in order to preform better. Writing has always been a strength of mine, but I found it a challenge to move from the high school, six-paragraph essay format that I had grown accustomed to. Throught the course of this semester, I was able to acquire many different skills in ENG 1101 that have helped me transition into more complex writing. These include various writing techniques, MLA formatting, writing for purpose, convincing my arguments and finding and properly using sources. The portfolio I have submitted is comprised of three works of writing that I completed for ENG 1101 over the last three months.
I came to Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) after transferring from Gallaudet University. I found that what I was required to take a pre-course before taking the real credit courses at TNCC called English Fundamentals 1. So, I took the class that my counselor and my interpreter, who worked in 25 years at TNCC, recommended me to meet Ms. Dubbé. This semester I have improved my reading and writing skills. I am a better student because I have learned effective strategies and pondered over my future goals.
During my college career I have been doing a wide variety of writing. All of which have assisted shaping as well as molding me into an effective writer. Some of the classes that helped improve my limits to excel as a writer are my English 280 class, intro to Computer Science class, and lastly Juvenile Justice Class. I have done a few segments of writing in the three semesters of law enforcement class that I have taken here at WIU. Never would I have thought that the three major writing assignments that would shape and influence me into the writer I am today would come from of my LEJA classes, but they have.
Having a senior show is a very hard experience, but it is incredibly rewarding. I feel like my show was a huge success and I only had a few minor hiccups along the way. One of the hiccups would be that I bought some frames to early. I had an idea of how I would hang and display my work early on so I went ahead and bought some frames early.
Feral, wild, and undomesticated. These are the terms allocated to describe the children in the TLC documentary Wild Child: The Story of Feral Children. As a product of their parental negligence and poor living conditions, these children had no choice but to seek protection and care from stray dogs and/or wolves in order to survive. Stories and tales of such children being raised by wolves date back to centuries prior to the domestication of civilization and modern society. The documentary delves into the eternal nature versus nurture debate.
Ancient myths are stories that we hear as stories but for the inhabitants of the ancient world, they were fact. The people in those times depended on the stories much like religions today depend on their own stories that they each regard as fact. The ancient myths started as songs and spoken stories until they were written down either in stone or script. We have been able to dig them up and study them to learn about the culture and politics of ancient civilizations. The authors of the myths were often close to or patrons of those in positions of power.
Every student wants to be successful. However, the success of students around them causes them to exert even more, and sometimes unnecessary, work on their classes. This includes binge studying for a test to be sure that they do better than the students in the class, or as mentioned by Zinsser, “writing ten-page papers to impress them [the professors]” when five-page essays were actually assigned (Zinsser). Because there are students that do this, others feel the need to add more writing to their essays in order to reach the levels of those students.
I have watched a lot of inspiring movies and I would say that Temple Grandin is the most striking. This movie revolves around a woman named, Temple Grandin, who became successful despite having limitations due to her autism. She graduated as college valedictorian and she also completed her Ph.D. Furthermore, the movie also shows the importance of moral support and understanding to the persons with autism for their consolation and feeling of relief. I commend the movie for effectively showing how a person with autism or disability like Temple Grandin could overcome her limitations and eventually become successful. The movie clearly emphasized that the support, help, understanding, respect and acceptance of people are some of the vital factors that influence the persons with autism to be optimistic in order to have a positive outlook in life.
As I reflect on the past 15 months of attending CCU. I recall the excitement, and the overwhelming stress of having to work full time and attend online college. I was not sure that I could complete my degree at fifty years old. Because of being out of school for over 30 years. I was somewhat reluctant to give it a try.
My Writing Experience In previous courses, my writing skills have been mediocre or just enough to pass the class. Throughout the duration of this course, I have written a variety of papers using different techniques and skills. Previously I would write assuming that the only audience would be my instructor. This course has helped me realize that there are many steps and skills involved with writing a well-organized and easy to comprehend essay.
