According to a report “Fostering Exploration and Excellence in 21st Century Schools” by Economist Intelligence Unit in February 2018, sponsored by Google for Education, it is important to consider the rapidly changing labor market due to the introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) when teaching students. Active learning, problem-solving, classroom discussions, project-based learning and personalized learning are key strategies for helping the students gain the required skills. The four Cs that are crucial in helping students cope with these sudden changes are Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Communication and Creativity. At the same time, foundational literacies such as mathematics, science and reading will always remain important. The two things computers cannot do that humans can are persuasive communication and ill-structured problem solving, where one has no idea about what data is needed and what the answer will look like, according to Justin Reich of MIT Teaching Systems Lab. Like Elon Musk, the found of SpaceX, who is able to imbibe his learning from diverse fields such as energy, aerospace, transportation and software and take bold business decisions based on them. This is called as “learning transfer.” If critical thinking and problem solving are key to future success at the workplace, then we need to learn from the people who have already achieved it. By understanding different principles, thoughts and experiences, one becomes better at problem-solving. The current education system needs to adapt to this new thinking. This means blending disciplines, bringing different subjects together, going interdisciplinary and collapsing boundaries.
