Which of the four principles from the Code have you chosen to write about in your essay? What is your reason for choosing this principle to discuss?

After looking at The Code: Professional Standards of Practice and Behaviour for Nurses and Midwives (Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) 2015 I have chosen the 'Prioritise People' principle to look at further.

The reason I picked this principle is because I believe as a nurse we have to make sure the individuals in our care feel valued and are made to feel like their opinions and what they have to say matters to us. This will allow them to trust us and feel comfortable in believing that we are providing them with the best care that we can and that their needs are important to us.

It is important for the patient to understand the care they are receiving and to understand the steps and procedures that need to be carried out in order for them to receive the appropriate care which responds to their needs. As a patient I would also expect my nurse to listen to my concerns and take these on board so that they can listen and respect my decisions about the care I wish to receive, and that they respect my right to confidentiality. It is also important that as nurses we don't judge people or label them as we don't know them. When these steps are taken then I can trust that the nurse is acting in the best interest of the patient and this would make them feel valued and respected as a
