In the History of Mental Health: Dual Diagnosis article, it states the differences between the old asylum’s treatments to today asylum’s treatments towards mental people. One of the oldest asylum is Bethlehem, located in London, and inside those walls individuals with psychological disorders were chained, whipped, and allowed to lie in their own waste (Rathus 2016). In the History of Mental Health: Dual Diagnosis article, Dorothea Dix proved to the General Assembly of North Carolina that patients within the asylum are chained, abused, and even kept in an unclean area. Another key pamphlet of the period on mental illness in the late eighteenth century is Andrew Harper, who followed on from Arnold’s work, he produced a ‘Treatise on the Real Cause and Cure of Insanity; in Which the Nature and Distinctions of this Disease Are Fully Explained and the Treatment Established on New Principles’ which was published in London in 1789. This pamphlet expresses the need for pre-tests before patient’s admittance to madhouses and asylums, to gain the correct diagnosis, in the hope the patient’s condition does not worsen under the caregiving of these institutes and that they are given the right course of treatment if possible. Harper comments in the pamphlet, ‘the custom of immediately consigning the unfortunate… to the cells of bedlam… is certainly big when ignorance and absurdity. At the same time, it destroys all the obligation of humanity, robs the sufferer of every advantage’ . He explained that doing this, would help to recover and cure the mentally ill patient in the quickest and best possible way.

Topic 4- Mental Health Laws are Discriminatory and should be abolished Mental health laws have historically been centred of controversial discourse and especially since the development of international human rights demanding greater recognition of the legal capacity of people suffering mental illness. In the 1980s, a significant legal reform emerged in the country with the call for de-institutionalisation of mental health patients. Since then, the law in this area has been slowly evolving into a ‘rights-based’ framework seeking to redress the detriment caused by unregulated medical power and large-scale institutionalisation for the treatment of mental health patients. However, the current form of the law in each Australian state and territory is far from achieving the international recommendations for the protection of human rights of people with mental health illness.
The continuing issue of social and emotional wellbeing (SEWB) for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, is one that needs to be addressed in order to raise struggling health outcomes that compromise the lives of Aboriginal people. This is underlined by the fact that suicide, in 2014, was found to be the fifth leading cause of death in Indigenous populations, as well as one of the significant factors leading to a high life expectancy gap (ATSISPEP, 2016). It was also found that compared to the non-Indigenous Australian rate of suicide, Aboriginal people were twice more likely to attempt to end their life (Department of the Prime Minister and the Cabinet, 2017), which has consequently lead to the creation of policies and recommendations

The Mental Health Act 2007 allows people with a mental disorder to be admitted to hospital, detained and treated without their consent – either for their own health and safety, or for the protection of other people (Mentalhealthcare.org.uk, 2015). Under this legislation a person can be admitted and given treatment against their wishes. Detainees are always told their rights so that they do not feel as though they are being punished; they also have the right to appeal. To be able to detain a person, they must be struggling to care for themselves and a risk to both themselves and others. Additionally, it must be the last resort because all other forms of treatment have been tried to no avail.
I want to improve the lives of children with issues and help them find a person they can trust. The situation is not what really sparked the interest I have, it is the feelings I felt when seeing the cuts on my friend’s wrist. I do not want any child to have to feel that feeling. Seeing how she coped with her stress by harming herself, made me realize that this issue is common and many students cope with their stress in a similar way. Suicide rates amongst young teens are rising and I believe this is where school psychologist comes into play.

Throughout this period, children are learning to socialize with adults and other children. They learn by imitating other peoples behavior or actions that is why it 's important to watch what you say and do around a child. As a child, it is harder to get in touch with feelings because at the ages of one and three it can be a little stressful trying to express your feelings to an adult. Toddlers need a caregiver to help them communicate and express themselves in a healthy respectful manner. The relationships that children have with others between the ages of one and three form the basis of their capacity for love and affection later on in life.
Besides viewing this process as a foundation for future knowledge and abilities, I have been anticipating this stage of gaining deeper and professional knowledge in psychology for a long time. To summarize, this goal is elicited from my passion and enthusiasm for psychology, to remain focused throughout these three years, instead of gaining fame or impress others. After graduation, I want to engage in a job related to psychology, allowing me to serve others by applying the knowledge learnt. It may not need to be anything very great; I just hope to contribute to the society’s wellbeing, whether it is in the clinical setting, corporate world or any other aspects. Most importantly, I hope to raise awareness and acceptance towards mental disorders.
