Robotics is more than robots. From the day that I walked through that overhead door, I have known that Robotics is place like no other. Where else can you create? Design? Build? From earliest days man has desired expression, connection, and a heart inspired. That is what Penn Robotics has given to me and many others. Robotics has not taught me to parrot the words of my mentors and teachers mindlessly like so many others. It has encouraged me to question everything. How does this work? Why? How can we make it better? In the days of Wikipedia where everything is a mouse click away, knowledge and innovation are in grave danger. Everywhere, students are content to keep the status quo. An opportunity to better yourself and others through dedication, commitment, and drive towards a common goal. I am a strong advocate for the idea that all students in high school should involve themselves in a school activity or club. These activities provides a strong safety net and support for students that would normally fall through the cracks of the high school experience. And there is no better activity for that than Robotics. Everyone plays a role and it is what you make of it. There is no “Star Player”, no single “MVP”, no “Team Captain”, only a group of students dedicated to a cause that encourages them to be the best that they can. If you want to drive, you put in the time to practice. If your want to design, you submit revisions. Before Robotics, I had never considered the value of time. I worked with the assumption that I had as much time as I needed for anything that I needed to get done. Robotics changed that. Suddenly, the amount of time I worked was important. What I did with my time was important. I became aware that time is a finite resource that must be taken advantage of. I began working as much as I could during Robotics, staying after until Mr. Langfeldt kicked us all out, and then staying up all night thinking about what I needed to get done next time we
