Friendship is a relationship between two people who hold mutual affection for each other; friendly disposition or feeling for another; the bond of friends. A friend is somebody who doesn’t judge you, who listens, and somehow makes everything all right. You can lose a friend. Friendship can disappear just like that then you both just act like strangers. Through the use of metaphors in the quote and the symbols in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck the show that having a friend makes you a happier person.
By using symbolism in Of Mice and Men, the author shows how friendship can help you and make you happier. There are different kinds of friendships and Lennie and George have a very close one. Lennie and George share a dream and they’re dream is something they can share forever. They want to own a house together with ten acres, a little win’ mil, a kitchen, an orchard, a room to themselves, and a little fat iron stove. “We gotta get a big stake together. The narrator compares themselves to a shadow, a shoulder, a pillow, and a smile. A shadow to show that even if they’re friend is alone they’re going to be there for them no matter what they’ll be their shadow. A shoulder so when their best friend is crying you can cry on them they’ll get you through it. Hug a friend like a pillow but instead of a pillow because why hug your pillow when you have a friend who can actually talk to you. A smile so you can always be happy even if you aren’t happy your friend will be there and their smile will help you and get you to smile. “If you’re alone, I’ll be your shadow...If you need to be happy, I’ll be your smile” (Quote). This is about being there for one another. You always need that one friend there for you no matter what. Friends make you
