According to Lucius Seneca, an ancient Roman philosopher, “the most beautiful quality of friendship is to understand, and to be understood.” As human beings we are constantly searching for comfort and acceptance in each other, which our friends provide. John Steinbeck illustrates this well in Of Mice and Men through the friendship of Lennie and George. While their friendship brought them both companionship and comfort, it wasn't perfect and also led to many complications. In the first chapter of Of Mice and Men, Lennie is often compared to an animal. Not only does this give us the idea that he is/can be animalistic in nature, but it affects the reader's feelings about Lennie's actions. Lennie is also shown to be manipulative in chapter one
