In the book Of Mice and Men, two men are traveling around California to find work during the Great Depression. They have known each other for a very long time because Lennie’s Aunt Clara wanted George to look after him. George, the leader, is the person who chooses where they go and work. Lennie just simply follows along and does the work. Lennie has a mental disability that causes him to forget things quickly, not talk properly, and do things that a normal man wouldn’t do.
Complex Friendships are Complex Most people have all watched that movie or show where the not so bright kids becomes friends with the smart one. Where they work through their differences and unite in the end. In Of Mice and Men, two characters, Lennie and George, have a special kind of friendship. Even though they get frustrated with each other, they do bring out the best qualities in each other.
In John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men there are a lot of themes. The themes consist of friendship, loneliness, discrimination and dreams. All of these themes are important, and play immense role in the outcome at the end. The major theme is that friends stick together; unconditionally; this is demonstrated through Lennie and George's actions in Weed, in the bunk house, and in the aftermath of Curly's wife's death. One example of true friends sticking together is exemplified when George stays with Lennie after Lennie's actions in Weed.
Have you ever met someone whom you felt absolutely safe with, and felt that you can rely on them? Your friendship with that person may seem incomparable to others and can mean a lot. A true friendship can help you feel meaningful to others. In Of Mice And Men, by John Steinbeck, the friendship between George and Lennie shows how much George loves Lennie as a brother by giving him protection, and how Lennie has given George his entire love and companionship.
How Friendship Is Portrayed In Of Mice and Men Steinbeck shows the importance of friendship in the novella Of Mice and Men. Steinbeck shows that friendship is a key to life; without it, you’ll have a long life ahead of you. He does this by showing characters with both strong friendships and some with a lack of friendship. He portrays George and Lennie as having the strongest connection and greatest friendship in the world. While Crooks lacks it all.
In “Of Mice and Men”, Steinbeck is writing about loyalty and friendship. George was very loyal to Lennie even after all of Lennies scandalous acts, Curley had wanted to make sure that his wife is safe, and another example would be that Candy’s dog was Cany’s best friend. Although Lennie and George had their differences, their friendship and loyalty towards each other shines throughout the story. Lennie had said “You said I was your cousin!” and George had replied with “That was a lie.
One of the ways Steinbeck illustrates the importance of friendship is through the personalities and experiences of the characters. To illustrate, after coming from one of their failed jobs that took place in Weed, Steinbeck’s main characters George and Lennie settle by a river on the way to their next job as migrant farmers. George, as Lennie’s caretaker, scolds him for killing a mouse, and Lennie threatens to run away. George then tries, and succeeds, to reassure Lennie that staying together is best for them: “With us it ain’t like that. We got a future.
“Friends... they cherish one another's hopes. They are kind to one another's dreams.” (Friendship Quotes). Of Mice and Men is a book about two friends who have a dream of owning a farm, Lennie: the dumb one and George: the smart one, who travel together in search of a job, during the Great Depression.
“Good Friends” or a “Healthy Friendship” does not include any of these things, on the contrary, it's the complete opposite. In the book “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, two characters are introduced; Lennie and George. Men from two completely different worlds; Lennie, built tall and bulky, muscular, but not so bright. George; short and skinny, “scrawny” but he is intelligent, way more intelligent than Lennie. These two men spend their lives traveling together, working and hoping one day they can buy their “dream farm” and settle down, not having to work anymore and make profit from the land and animals.
The novella, Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck is read by many high schools today. It was published in 1937 and is still read because many of the themes are still considered relevant. Even though the novella contains sensitive themes, it should remain in the school’s curriculum because it teaches valuable lessons about the topics of friendship as well as how the treatment of others affects them; including women, people with mental disabilities, and people of color. This novella shows how forming friendships can be so important.
We all desire friendship and a safe space. In John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men, Lennie Smalls has a yearning for both. Lennie believes in his best friend, George, to never betray him. He also believes in his safe space, the riverbank and his dream. In my drawing, both of these needs are present.
Of Mice and Men was published in 1937 during a time of bi-racism between the caucasians and the african americans, and the apathetic Great Depression, which may have served as inspiration. In the novel two opposites attract, a gargantuan but mentally challenged man by the name of Lennie, and a small, nimble, and intelligent man named George. Suffering from a mental illness Lennie gets into trouble when he 's alone, but George always saves him, George knows Lennie doesn 't do anything, “out of meanness” as he says. Undoubtedly the reader assimilates that Lennie kills a young lady, said to have done so accidentally. Furthermore without any control George was forced to kill Lennie.
In ‘Of Mice and Men’, written by John Steinbeck, friendship is portrayed as one of the main themes in this novella and a very important part of people’s lives. Steinbeck also portrays friendship by highlighting the importance of friendship and showing how its presence and absence can trigger many positive and negative emotions. Its presence creates hope, feeling of companionship and a sense of responsibility. In spite of friendship’s presence creating positive feelings, its absence does the complete opposite. It generates a feeling of loneliness and isolation.
Steinbeck uses motifs of animals as archetypes and to show that people crave companionship and are meant to be around others. Lennie´s character is often compared to animals who often live with other animals instead of by themselves.¨Slowly, like a terrier
Companionship is human nature; people strive to be admired, be praised, and find what is known as true friendship. True friendship means having someone always by your side, someone you do not need to ask why they stick around, and someone who knows you to your very core. In John Steinbeck’s novella, Of Mice and Men, true friendship is a constant subject of the story. The two main protagonists, Lennie and George, have a unique friendship, uncommon among ranch hands during the 1930s. The duo met in Auburn, California, while working together, and have traveled together ever since.
