From Stanley Cups to Coffee Cups”. This book is about Tim Horton, whose real name was Myles Gilbert “Tim” Horton. He was a famous Canadian hockey player who helped win four Stanley Cups. Horton was also most known for creating a coffee and doughnut shop called Tim Hortons, which is currently very popular with Canadians. His original name was named after his two grandfathers, Myles and Gilbert, but his mother always prefered using the name “Tim”. Therefore, Tim was his informal name ever since birth. Tim was born on January 12th, 1930 in Cochrane, Ontario. Due to certain circumstances, he died on February 21st, 1974 near St. Catharines, Ontario. Becoming a hockey player was a dream Tim always wanted to pursue. Therefore, him and his family moved to Duparquet, Quebec and in 1936, where he learned how to play hockey. When he was 15,Tim and his family moved to Sudbury. Tim started off playing for the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey Association's Copper Cliff Jr. Redmen in Sudbury of 1946-1947. He started building up the status of being able to play the role of a strong and tough defenseman. Later on, Tim signed a contract with Toronto Maples Leafs, which allowed him to enroll at St. Michael’s College, where he could continue his studies while playing hockey at the same time. Tim Horton had already made the Toronto Maple Leaf’s reserve list in 1947, but he wasn’t 100% ready to play in the National Hockey League (NHL). In the following years, he worked incredibly hard and improved the image of a strong defenceman. He even earned honours in the Ontario Hockey Association as the league’s best defenseman. He was pleased and content playing with the Toronto Maple Leafs, however, his first serious injury came during the 1945-1955 hockey season. In a game against the New York Rangers, Horton and Bill Gadsby collided into each other. Gadsby was a hard hitting player, and he bodychecked Horton. Horton’s leg had been broken, yet he also fractured his jaw. This event made Tim re-think about his future and how he could not rely on just hockey for his income to support his family. In 1962, Tim won his first Stanley Cup with the Toronto Maple Leafs. For the next 2 consecutive years, he also won Stanley Cups with the Leafs. In 1964, 2 major events happened, one of them was winning the Stanley Cup, and the other was establishing the first “Tim Horton” coffee and donut shop. The location of this shop is on Ottawa Street in Hamilton, Ontario. After a while, he chose Ron Joyce as the store’s first franchise, when he decided that he was going to expand “Tim Horton”. While he was handling his own business, he stilled played hockey in the NHL, and won his last Stanley Cup with the Leafs in 1967.
