Samson’s Future In the far future, Samson came to the San Diego Wild Animal Park from the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. One of the elephants that were born here was Phakamile. She became Samson’s mate. Soon, she became pregnant. San Diego Wild Animal Park was overjoyed of the new calf that was to be born. Samson and Phakamile were very happy. They couldn’t wait to meet their new calf. The first nineteen months of Phakamile’s pregnancy were normal and she was healthy. It wasn’t until her twentieth month that her health began to deteriorate. Phakamile was deathly ill. He placed his trunk on her stomach that carried their unborn calf, a calf he was certain he would never meet. “Samson, I-I’m sorry.” Phakamile said. “What are you sorry for? None of this is your fault.” Samson said to her. He was confused. “You’ll miss me right?” she said. “I’m afraid so. Two of the veterinarians stayed in the elephant barn to stitch up Kamile, but by the time they were done, she was already dead, the calf had not survived either. Emanti covered his eyes with his ears as he weeped. Samson looked at his lifeless mate. One of the veterinarians took the dead calf to Samson. It was heartbreaking to see his dead calf. He didn’t even get to know what gender it was. When morning came, a ray of sunlight glowed on the calf. The calf opened its eyes. The sun had healed the calf.
